Need Construction Company Cake Ideas
Decorating By sprtd76 Updated 13 Jul 2006 , 8:10pm by alicia_froedge
Hello Everyone,
I am looking for everyone's wisdom on this one. I have been asked by my boss to make the cake for our annual pig roast. It needs to feed between 75-100 people. I am scared to death to do this cake. What I need to know is how big a cake will I need to make and does anyone have any decorating ideas. The company I work for is a construction company and we primarily build commercial restaurants. Any ideas would be a great help. Thanks in advance. ![]()
Do you use any heavy equipment? a pic of that or a small carved cake on top of a larger sheet would work.
How about a hard hat made with the ball pan on top of a larger cake? I've seen fire helmets made with that and that might work.
Tools made out of fondant or chcolate going around the border might be cute too.
I am making a cake for my father in law for his birthday. He is into construction. Its his 50th surprise party so I am making a three tiered stack cake then going off of an episode I saw on Sugar Rush. He had cut shapes of tools out of chocolate and stuck them in various places in the cake, sort of stick out. (if that makes sense)
two 12x18s will serve at least 108 people very generous 2x2 size servings.
> can do one in chocolate other in yellow/vanilla.
> can do as two separate cakes or push them together and ice as one big cake.
___________
> could do a blueprint on top...actual one from recent job or fantasy one (includes the perpetual fountain of --?-- {free beer, chocolate, etc.})
> cake w/ carved or molded tools on it: hammer, saw, level, measuring tape, etc. these could be FBCTs or edible images or chocolate cutouts or 3-D cakes in the case of things like a powerdrill.
> any particular "style" your company does? duplicate a major aspect of that?
> if doing two cakes -- one has company logo...other one of the ideas above?
and since it is for a pig roast....
well, how about two roasted pigs??? one real and yours from cake??

I just did a cake with 4 9x13 layers ... stacked two together and shoved them side by side. This equals a full sheet cake, which should give you plenty of servings, and it's a little easier to deal with the 4 9x13's than the bigger half-sheet and full-sheet size cakes (especially if you don't have those pan sizes already!)
I think they freehanded the tools on Sugar Rush.
You can do a gallery search on CC for tools, construction, handyman, that type of thing -- lots of people have done very clever tools and such with MMF. Maybe even do a search for Bob-the-Builder cakes for ideas.
I also just did a cake with restaurant-related MMF decorations -- it's in my photos if you want to take a look.
I remember seeing the Sugar Rush episode with the groom's cakes. I even had it DVR'd, but my DH deleted it. Do you remember how he did the tools, did he have molds for them or did he freehand them?
saw this too.
some like the hand saw were freehand
others, like circular saw blade, he made a cardboard (oak tag/card stock) template and then traced w/ a sharp knife.
all were made from slabs of chocolate (white & reg.) he poured out and allowed to cool until it was still soft enough to cut but firm. He peeled away the trimmings as he did each and left shape to harden fully.
(see..told you I couldn't spell!!)
I was supposed to make a cake for a company I worked for a couple years ago that did disaster restoration. The company logo was well known on their vans and trucks. I was making a company van with the company logo (out of cake with an edible image) and putting it on a sheet cake. They ended up cancelling the picnic so I never got to finish the cake so no pictures but everyone loved the idea. We did get to eat the cake and I gave the owner the images and I got paid so - i didn't lose out on anything.
Just an idea
Debbie
Doug,
You are such a wealth of knowledge. How do you store all this information in your head? I am lucky if I can remember what 2+2 is somedays. Thanks for your help. I do appreciate it!
and there's your answer...
2+2=5 right!??! (miserable at math...so cleared that space out for cakes!
-- also cleared out the spelling section too!
)
sprtd76 - I think he had traced the shapes onto cardboard from the actual tools. Then used the cardboard cut outs to use as stencils to cut the chocolate.
I didn't even think to DVR the show until later that night. Now I have been glued to the website to see if it will be back on. !!!
