I see not reason why you couldn't use gold luster dust mixed with a little vodka and then paint it on with a small brush. I think it would be easier. That's just my opinion.

Oh great, now it posted! icon_confused.gif Anyway, as I was trying to say, it's done with lustre dust, vodka and a very small brush (maybe 000). Hope that helps! icon_biggrin.gif

I definitely think you can do that with luster dust. Maybe they have that discription for Brides who most likely will have no clue what luster dust is. They are more likely to know what gold leaving is though - same outcome. Just my thought....

I agree. Also You might want to do the design in royal it holds it really well, I did that on one cake and got that look, not nearly as nice though. That is a gorgeous cake.

I would do it with luster dust that way all your "golds" will match.

Luster dust won't give you the same depth of color, but the cake is fabulous, and you can not miss. Do it!

That cake is amazing. Did anyone else do that math on the price per servings it said? $12/serving!!!!!! When people question us about charging $3-$5/serving, we should send them to this link!

I agree GinaJuarez! I'm glad they listed the price. It's a beautiful cake but I can see some bride bringing the picture in and asking "Can you do this cake for me for $100?" lol

I have a recipe from one of my books on gold "paint" . It works really good. I used it to paint some gold labels and the gold foil for a chocolate champagne bottle. It comes from the Fantasy Art and Sugar from Marco Antonio. Here it is:
2 tsp gold powder (use Luster dust)
2 tsp conf sugar
6 drops of corn syrup
Keep it in an air tight container because it will eventually harden.

thank you all. i'm not up there in the cake world yet. my co-worker (groom) knows that. I'm going to try a practice mini cake first. the details on scrolls will have to be different though.
And those prices, yeah glad they see them. Cause is right here in NYC, where we work & they're getting married at. I think someone has already quoted them $5 per slice.
I'll post a pic on Monday of the mini trial cake. thank you for the recipe i will try that. i already have the gold dust at home.

Here is a good example of gold Lustre Dust painting on a cake by Nunuk:

This cake looks every bit as good as the one you referenced!!

Oh definetly! That and painting all that detail by hand must take a long time.
