I need to make a 3-D soccer ball cake, big enough to serve 30. I have the Wilton Sports Ball pan, but it is too small on its own. I've been trying to find out - can you use the Soccer Ball pan in the same way? That is, can you bake 2 half balls, and put them together to form a full ball? Or can it only be used as a half ball?! TIA!

I have seen the soccer ball done as a complete ball. The one I saw had the ball then sitting on a sheet cake that looked like a soccer field. Sorry but I don't remember where I saw this picture.

yes I have done this soccer cake with 1/2 ball pan and full ball. If you search the gallery and type soccer you will see quite a few awesome cakes that have been done.

good luck

I've seen the pan used only half of the soccer ball placed on top of a large sheet cake that is meant to look like the soccer field...that would give you enough cake for 30 people. HTH

Thanks for the replies! I've seen lots of 3-D soccer ball cakes, too. But I'm pretty sure that's using the Sports Ball pan, not the larger Soccer Ball pan. I managed to download the Soccer Ball pan instructions from the Wilton site (couldn't get it to work from this site, for some reason) - and it doesn't mention a thing about baking 2 and putting them together....which would leave me to believe it isn't designed that way! As opposed to the Sports Ball pan, which IS designed that way....

No, the large soccer ball pan can't be used to make a full soccer ball - the dimensions aren't right to make a sphere with two of the cakes.

Do a search in the gallery for soccer, and you'll find many different ways of doing the soccer ball cakes. There are several ways to do it and get the number of servings you want.

hth!

I just did a soccer search on this site and WOW ~ there are a lot of cool designs out there.

Also, in my photos there's a picture of my earth cake (under "Darth Vador and the Earth). I used 2 bundt pans and it makes a much larger ball than the soccer pan.

If you need more servings can you add it on top of a round cake decorated like green grass? Or how about cupcakes to go around it with soccor balls on them?

There is a cake in my photos of a soccer ball cake I did using two cakes baked in the Soccer Ball Pan. It is not a perfect circle but once you put them together you can carve around the middle a bit and fix that.

I think that the soccer ball and the football pans are only about 40% of the 3-D item. If you have your heart set on a full large ball, you can bake a regular round layer large enough to fill in the missing section and "glue" one ball piece to each side to complete the sphere. A little carving may be necesary - and/or using only a torted portion of the round layer to bring the ball into proportion. The soccer cupcakes sound like a great and easy solution, IMNSHO icon_biggrin.gif

Hi, I did this soccer ball with the same pan and what I did, to have it proportioned, is add a round 8" x 2" or 3" cake between the two half balls. Glue them together with BC, freeze them and then I carved the ball to have it the right size. Hope this helps.
