Ok.. I have to vent. This happened to me 3 times this week. All unrelated customers. With each customer, when it came time to ask how many people the cake was for, they volunteered the information that, even though the function was for 40 people, ( and 35 and 50 ) that these ladies are always on diets so they won't really eat much cake. In other words... they didnt want me to quote for the accurate amount of people.

HOW am I supposed to determine exactly how much cake ladies on diets eat????

I wound up basically ignoring each comment and giving them a price for the accurate amount of servings, but after the 3rd time I heard this i thought it can't just be ME. And mind you.. this was before they had any idea AT ALL as to how much the cake would cost.

Its not just me, is it?

My Great Grandma is always on a diet, but always goes back for seconds when it's dessert time. I think you did the right thing, better to have too much than not enough.

I agree. People say their always on diets. But when dessert comes, forget about it!! You did the right thing. I always ignore those comments. After all, who can resist cake????

I'd make THEM give me a number.

"There's going to be 40 people but they're all on diets."

"So how much cake do you want me to make, then?"

My dad is a diabetic and isn't supposed to have sugar at all!!! But everytime his baby girl makes a cake he HAS to have a piece lol.... This past Sunday at my daughter's party I was fixin my mom's plate and was about to scrape the excess icing off the spatula onto her plate and she piped up with "I don't want all that extra junk on my plate!" so I made up dads and he said "bring your turner over my plate for a minute" and laughed and proceeded to scrape every bit of frosting off the spatula onto his plate lol... He loves my cakes and can't resist them... So I always count every head that's going to be there weather they are going to eat cake or not lol icon_wink.gif

Perfect!

If it's not offered, I usually ask who is going to eat the cake. If it's a bunch of little kids or women on diets, then we discuss smaller sizes. If it's a bunch of longshoremen just coming off a 12 hour shift, then we account for that. Always better to have too much than not enough, right?

I don't want to sound like I'm scolding or getting on a soapbox, but please, please, for your father's sake, be careful. I know it's a cute anecdote, but if he is eating a lot of sugar and not allowing for it in his diet, it can be extremely unhealthy for him. Diabetes is such an insidious disease - it runs in my family and was the main cause of death for my grandfather. Just want to let you know that if you need to, hide some of your goodies from your father. icon_wink.gif I'm sure he's much more important than just being your biggest baking fan!!

That happened to me not too long ago -- we want a cake for a bridal shower with 50 people attending but don't want that much cake because they're all ladies on diets who eat small portions, blah blah blah. She got cake for 50 and then some (the gold monogram cake in my pix) and later not only raved about it but told me "most of the women had seconds and some even took some of the leftovers home." HA!! icon_razz.gif

"Diet people" have always bothered me. I just want to shake them to make them understand that it's not about a quick fix but a healthy lifestyle that you can maintain.

I totally agree! I run like a crazy woman so I can enjoy all of my yummy cakes without blowing up like a balloon. Of course portion control has a lot to do with it. Something I'm still working on! icon_wink.gif

Because I am a smart arse at heart the first thing that comes to mind after she says all the women are on diets is to say, "o.k. Do we count them each as a half slice, and will there be any bulimics there? I want to make sure they each have a slice of cake even if they are going to throw it up."

It's ok you don't sound like you're scolding or preaching lol. Daddy doesn't eat ANY sugar at all!! He's been so good about this. He goes to the next state over to the little omish market and buys sugar free candy once every other month, buys one baggie or maybe two, on the way to the slots lol. That little baggie lasts him a great long time lol. He never was real big on junk food much just an occasional sweet here and there maybe once a month really... But he's a heavy man so... bad eating is a big deal with his docs right now and he's following the best he can but a stubborn 70 yr old man.... he's gonna get his own way sometimes lol. But as far as my goodies... he doesn't touch em normally. I told him I was going to make him a special diabetic cake for his birthday next month and he said no he won't eat it just make him a normal cake and he promises to only eat a little slice lol... I think I'll fib to him and make him the diabetic cake anyway lmao. And yes I'm daddy's little girl still at 28 and he is my life, next to my husband and daughter, and I don't want to lose him so I agree easing up on what I give them at that household is better then losing daddy lol.

Becky, he sounds a bit like my grandfather. The main difference seems to be that Grandpa loved his sweets though. I think I get that from him, as do my kids. So I especially try to watch them.

I just hate the fact that so many people have to deal with this illness. It's so insidious. Many people don't know the damange, havoc, and toll it takes on the body. The blindness, kidney problems, circulation issues, etc. I would hate to hear that your father was enjoying your baked goodies often, but you, and he, sound like you have it pretty under control. Now if you and your mom could only get him to control the other important aspect - the rest of his diet. Yes, we had that problem with Grandpa, too. But the biggest problem was first getting him on his pills, and then switching over to insulin. He refused both for the longest time.

Good luck to him. Enjoy every moment you have together. I dearly miss my grandparents and my mom (Mom also had diabetes).

My favorite thing to say is: "there are no calories when you're eating at a party." icon_biggrin.gif

Or I just say "hey, I worked at McDonald's and the trick is to have a large diet coke with your ...{fill in the blank} and they cancel right out!" icon_lol.gif

LOL... i love the comment about how many people need half slices! lol..
Yes I really wanted to shake the people and say "JUST GIVE ME A DAMN NUMBER ALREADY!" ..

And just THIS morning I got " well.. the cake I need is for somewhere between 20 and 60 kids. " OH GREAT. So now I'm a magician and can magically figure that number out???? No. He is going to get a quote for a 60 kid cake.

And I have been on a diet my entire life it feels like and i ALWAYS have a piece of the cake. And I would be really ticked off if someone didnt get enough cake for ME because I'm always watching my weight.

JUST GIVE ME A NUMBER DAMNIT.

i ALWAYS make my cakes bigger than they need to be anyway..
This is reminding me of the bride who needs a cake for between 150 and 250 people. lol...

i give up.

Everyone's on some sort of diet, it's just that some of us are on junk food diets or high calorie. icon_lol.gif

I guess most people I know who are trying to lose weight will slip up for a special event or holiday so I wouldn't want to not have enough cake if they wanted some.

that is too funny!

As a representative of those who are always on a "diet", I must point out the fact that I am always on a "diet" unless the food is too good to resist. I might skip french fries with my sandwich but I would NEVER pass up a piece of cake! All that sacrifice is just so I can enjoy the things that are truly important to me......

I love the wit of your comment-especially the bulimic part. Most times, I wouldn't joke about such a matter, but in this case it's well deserved. Diet-smiet, mine consists of cake, frosting and dark chocolate, so count me in for a triple slice.

i work on the theory too that if whatever your about to consume doesnt have a little label telling you how many calories there are then it obviously means there are none!

i take it your not about to pipe the calorific content onto the back of your cake lol so therefore it is calorie free!

maybe ive just found the reason for my overweightness......
