I have a table that has grooves in it that I use to roll out my fondant and I was hoping that someone would be able to give me some ideas on what I could use to cover it other than the regular mats that I can buy.... it is the size of a kitchen table and I would like to get something to cover the entire thing... anyone have any ideas of me???

a sheet of plexiglass from Lowe's or Home Depot or a thick piece of vinyl from fabric store.

Plexiglass is a good idea, but that would be big and heavy, think about where you would store it?! If you are going to go all out for something to cover the table, might as well just buy a cheap table!

A more costly solution, but a stable and durable one, would be having your DH covering it in Formica.

Okay, I've seen several people use DH, what the heck does that mean?

In another thread, someone mentioned she bought a heavy-duty vinyl shower curtain to cover her table.....I keep meaning to pick one up!

I understand what you are saying. The thick vinal is not going to fix the problem as it will still fall into the grove some. If you roll your fondant out on crisco and lift the matt over the cake then you do need something to lay over the grove.

Plexi glass sounds like a good idea. Also what about getting a piece of glass cut to fit the table. It may not be cheap, but it would would solve your problem and you wouldn't have to store it any where as you could just leave it on the table all of the time.

I have ceramic tiles over one of my countertops (the biggest) and you can not roll fondant out on it, even on a matt because of the groves. My brother works with sheet metal and I got him to cut me a piece of sheet metal to use when rolling out fondant. It works great for me, but then again it was easy for me to get ahold of. icon_smile.gif

Wal Mart sells clear vinyl in a couple of thicknesses for not much money at all! It's on a roll in the fabric department. I think the thickest is about $2 per yard. It's probably 60 wide. I don't think it would sink into your grooves.

that is the vinyl i was referring to...the thick stuff found in the fabric dept. walmart has a couple of thickness ...the fabric store has some even thicker....almost as thick as floor vinyl(clear stuff for heavy traffic areas). The plexiglass, if used wouldn't have to be removed from the table...route the edges so there's no sharp corners and it could remain on the table top....lift it up periodically to change a tablecloth
