I took my first Wilton Course 1 class last week and decided to practice doing a character cake this weekend. I brought it to work with me and everyone loved it (well, the taste anyways) there is none left!

I think it turned out ok, but Im pretty disapointed that I couldn't get the white "background" icing to be smooth.

Any tips?

I think it looks great. I still have those days when I can not get my frosting smooth. It's funny, it seems when I take my time, it looks worse. If I'm in a hurry, it's funny how I can get it smooth with one swipe!

You did great! Don't worry you will get better with smoothing as time goes. Try using a Viva paper towel after the butter cream has crusted a bit. Just lay it on top of you cake and smooth it with your hand (I always say I am giving my cake some love)

I think it looks great! I know how hard it is to get that smooth icing on those character cakes. They aren't flat so it can be really hard. One thing I have tried is to dip you finger in cornstarch and gently smooth the icing with your finger. It works well for small areas. I recently did a strawberry shortcake witha girlfriend for her daughter's b-day and we had a really tough time getting the BC smooth!

You did a really nice job. I think spongebob is one of the more difficult character cakes because of the detail and ALL the colors! You did really well! Nice job!

You did great here. SpongeBob looks good. I agree that he's a hard one to do.... all those colors that have to be mixed just so.........
