Actually, I never have that problem with my red or black cakes. I'm not sure why not though. I just made a fire truck iced completely in red buttercream and nobody's mouth turned red. I use Americolor red and black...maybe that's the difference. I only have to use a 4-5 drops for a whole batch of icing so that might be it.

Speaking of bubbles - does Americolor have those bubble guards to prevent bleeding, I wonder if it helps with this?? Help pls

i'm not sure where else you can get them.....i used to be able to get them at a local bakery supply shop but they dont carry them anymore. When I ordered mine from here they got here really fast...how much time do you have before the cake?

I have a couple of weeks, but I need to practice with it first and come up with an alternative if it bleeds icon_surprised.gif . This is my 1st wedding and I need the good reference. How long does it normally take to get it and do you get it from here?

I ordered them on a Tuesday and got them on a Friday through the 2-3 day priority mail. If everything is in stock you should order them....you can always practice with something else in the meantime & americolors are awesome...you will find good use with them anyway.

Thanks, I may go ahead and order them. I've colored icing b4 so that part's not new, I've just not used Americolor and the groom was very specific about the icing not coloring his mouth. Like it would be a permanent thing thumbsdown.gifthumbsdown.gif

LOL icon_lol.gif LOL icon_lol.gif
You all nearly have me rolling in the floor.

For the black ~ have you tried coloring the icing brown first, then adding some black? You will still get a black color without having to use too much.

I know this thread is a few days old, but would it be posible for you to use those spray colors? I think wilton and betty crocker both make them and while it might not look quite as nice, it would add much less color so it probably wouldn't color mouths... I don't think.

All I know is that I used americolor black on a cake I did recently, and well... there was a lot of black on my mouth...

I am assuming you are talking about coloring Buttercream icing?

Does it have to be buttercream? Can you put a thick layer of white buttercream on the cake then Use black and Red MMF? I usually roll my MMF about 1/16" thick or thinner and can color it when I melt the marshmellows so not as much color. I haven't had any problems with MMF turning mouths colors.

Not sure if this helps or not. But the less color you have to add to the icing the better luck you'll have without turning mouths colors

Thanks for your suggestions, I may try the spray on a test cake just to see. I asked the same question about coloring the MMF but was told that it too would color your mouth when you chew it.
Any thoughts on this?

Well, I'm not sure if MMF would color anyones mouth, but if you use a good layer of BC under the MMF, they could just pick off the MMF (have the cake cutter do it). I know this is done a lot for wedding cakes because so many people think they don't like fondant (thanks wilton! icon_rolleyes.gif). I acctually think that might be your best bet in this case... Good luck!
