So I'm sitting in the social hall at church (big pot luck tyo welcome our new pastor) and my friends daughter ambles over to check out the chocolate fountain I'm guarding from the kids. She just got engaged and tells me that she is considering asking me to do her wedding cake. Great, I think, I'd love to do a wedding cake. I sit her down and we chat a bit about her engagement and she springs what she wants on me..... one main cake and 14 sattelite cakes, including the stairs and fountain. I looked at her and asked her if she was joking and she was DEAD
SERIOUS!!! I asked her what country she was inviting and she just said that she was invitng her church family as well as her family family. I thanked her for her consideration and told that for my first wedding cake that really would be too much for me, but I would be happy to do her shower cake for her. She left and I gave a HUGE sigh!

Is she Samoan by any chance??? We have a tradition where your wedding cake has one tier for every year of the bride's age. So if she's 20...she get's 20 layers...but I guess in this case that would make her like 17...so my guess is that she just want's her dream cake reguardless of how many she has to feed.

14 sattelite cakes????? How much would you even charge for that? Is she young and not even considering the price--dad paying for this? yikes!

Also, I remember years shopping at Randall's and oohing and awing the wedding cakes(this was age 14 and way beyond) thinking I HAD to have--you guessed it--the stair cake with the fountain and the little plastic bridemaids/groomsmen figures. I thought that was soooo cool. Little did I know it would be nearly 20yr later I'd be getting married and my tastes totally changed. Guess God did not like the cake idea and made me wait till my tastes got better before he'd have me meet Mr. Right--lol

Wow thats alot of cake. My deal with my family for nieces, nephews and my kids is I will do their wedding cake for free but the final say on the cake will be mine. I got this idea from Duff. Sooo, my son announced to us they were getting married June 30 and the cake she chose had 11 cakes. I improvised a little and the picture of the final cake I did for them is in my pics. It was alot of fun but way to much cake. So I know where you are coming from. icon_biggrin.gif Got another neice getting married in August so we are picking here cake out this weekend. Yea!
Don't underestimate yourself I am sure you could do it! icon_lol.gif

My gosh, did you tell her that would serve ..... what? ..... 1000 PEOPLE?????

Sounds like this "little girl" is planning her dream wedding instead of her reality wedding.

As another CC'er is fond of saying.....

Run, Forest, Run!!

No offense but...
Is her head filled with brain matter or helium???? If that was me I would have fell in the floor laughing. Kudos to you for remaining calm.

Actually icon_smile.gif
If the sattelites were 6"ers and the 'main' cake 12,9,6 it would serve only about 250.
But why 14? Where did that # come from? She must have seen a picture somewhere.

I love how someone always looks at a question or situation and can say, "Wait a minute that's actually possible." It would have been weeks for me to think up ** make a smaller version of a big cake!** Brilliant! icon_biggrin.gif Maybe the fountain could be to the side. And dummies if need be.

The young lady probably saw a picture and liked it. I still have a hard time figuring out how much a cake serves. It has to be really hard for someone who doesn't make them. Maybe she did just "dream" it up. How incredible and charming to make a mini version of her cake! OF course, it's real easy to say this cause I don't hafta do it. icon_wink.gif But it would be cute! icon_biggrin.gif

I would definately not have done that for a first wedding cake either ... but then I would start thinking : I could bake and freeze and ... the sky is the limit! Would most probably still not have done it! icon_wink.gif

That is just freaking insane!!! Why would you need to have 14 cakes. You could do, like someone else has said, a smaller tier cake and then abunch of 6' rounds, say maybe only do 7 instead of the 14. You would be compromising abit. Do say a 10', 8', and 6' for the tiered cake and then all the smaller ones.
I probably would have said "NO" also but it would be do able!!
