I had this great idea last night, icon_wink.gif on how to save some money. I would make my own fondant~~~Yeah! It turned out to be the most expensive and utter waste of time, in all my years cake decorating. Prepackaged fondant, I will never leave your side again!!! I made a huge mess, and got sugar in places I won't even discuss at parties! I hope I am not just an idiot, and everyone else gets this right on the first try. I used to think of myself as the one who will try and try again, but I have to admit defeat, I will probably never try that disaster again!! icon_cry.gif

I'm sorry you had such a bad time with the fondant! Was it MMF? You're probably going to get lots of advice on how to be a successful fondant maker, but I have to say that weather makes a huge difference.

Ohio in the summer is a humid nightmare. You have to play with the recipe to get it to work right.

If you don't feel like fighting the elements and cleaning up the mess (I hate cleaning up after I make MMF) then Satin Ice or Pettinice is a beautiful thing and worth every penny. icon_smile.gif

Don't give up on it. Give it another go when you're in the mood. icon_smile.gif

Welcome to Cake Central!!

First of all.. WELCOME!!!

Second, what kind of fondant did you try making?? I've only tried the marshmallow fondant and I found it really easy. It took me a few times to get it right, but definately worth trying.

I'm so sorry to hear that happened. I have to ask though; was it 'regular' fondant or marshmallow? I've made marshmallow fondant quite a few times (at least 7 or 8, maybe more) and thought it was pretty easy. A little sticky and a few times I got it on me (thankfully I had my apron on), but nothing catastrophic.

I've read different recipes for 'regular' fondant and though it sounds a bit more involved, I don't think it should be a catastrophy in the making either, but then again, I've never tried making it...........yet.

I fourth the try the marshmellow fondant suggestion. The first batch I made was a little rough because I wasn't sure how sticky to leave it, but it's pretty forgiving. Hang in there, you'll get it.

Welcome to CC!

Sorry about your "not so fun with fondant" ordeal!

Maybe you were just having an "off" day for being creative in the kitchen and if you try making it again on another day you will probably not have much trouble if any.
I make all of my Fondant and love doing so. It is fast, easy and delicious. Toba Garrett's recipe in case you are wondering.
Like the others, I too would like to know what kind of fondant you were making.
Hope today is good! icon_smile.gif

Was this MMF? Well, my first attempt with it was pretty good, I found it went well. So I was all confident for my second attempt, it came out completely crumbly. I have no idea what happened, but managed to save it by adding more marshmallows and water. Anyways, my third attempt (right after my second) was perfect. It came out better then I thought it would ever come, I was so happy my DH thought I had gone crazy. I guess I'm saying to try it at least one more time. I may not of tried it again but the only fondant I can get where I live is Wilton.

I absolutely agree with you. I will not waste my time and money on any homemade fondant, the results just aren't consistent. Give me Fondx or Satin Ice any day of the week.

Carson, as a pp mentioned, sometimes the weather has a lot to do with it or it could've just been an off day.

Also, if there aren't any brands available to you locally, there's always the internet - fondant can be ordered from many many different places online.

Welcome to CakeCentral.

I agree that I will not make fondant. I tried it once and decided that I will continue to use Satin Ice. I love it. It tastes good and is so easy to work with.
