My First Wedding Cake Order Maybe...need Ideas Please!!

So a lady calls me up today (she was told to call me from our local grocery store bakery-have no idea how they got my number but I'm not complaining!!!
) wanting a square wedding cake for July 22/06! Nothing like leaving it to the last minute! Anyways, she doesn't want anything too fancy, it's a small wedding only 40 people. Just wants square cakes....would like a fair amount so there is some left over (????). She sounds pretty easy going....wants the cakes to be white and not stacked. So, what stand would you all recommend for this? Anyone have any ideas how to decorate the cake? I was thinking something simple like a nice ribbon around the bottom of each cake, maybe some petals around the base. I don't think her budget is very high for this. Get this, I won't be meeting with her until the 13th and she doesn't know for sure if I'll be doing the cake. Does anyone know if there is a Jo-ann's in Kalispell? I'm going there next week and would like to pick up some more square pans as well as look for a square cake stand. I don't have many stands and the ones I do have are round. This will be my first wedding cake order and I really want to impress. It's for the neighbouring town so if word gets out........more business for me LOL!
Thanks!!
She needs to commit, you put in a lot of energy into thinking about the cake and planning before you even buy ingrediants for a cake. I would call her and tell her you AT LEAST need a yes or no. I have an excel spreadsheet to determine pricing if you would like it (email me [email protected]) if that would help you.
Square cakes not stacked... how peculiar. The cake stands that are free standing are usually round. Not that I would go out and buy anything for such a small order that I probably wouldn't use again!!!!!!!
So your problems are 1) you need square cake pans and 2) square cake boards and 3) square cake plates of some sort... sounds like an awful lot of outlay of money for $60 worth of cake.
White with ribbon is of course pretty and easy.
How about getting a nice table cloth and putting somethings of different heights under the table cloth to elevate the cakes. This way you can use things you have around your house and probably create a look that is pretty cool.
If you go to Costco and look between the layers of toilet paper and paper towels they have large flat sheets of cardboard, perfect for cakes.
Good Luck!
well thats a pretty small cake to be using a stand. Maybe set one on the table and raise the other with a covered box, i would use a nice satin type material. The other thing i can think of is using a candle stick glue a plate to the top of it and raise the smaller cake like that. You can get a stick fairly cheaply and it won't look like its cheap at all. The same with a vase. Its time to think out side the box.
It sounds like you have a nice idea with the ribbon and the petals. Also, babies breath around the base of the cake, its much cheaper then bying real flower but with greens can be just as impressive.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that its paculiar not to have them stacked. I was thinking something along those lines because I don't want to put more money into the cake if I'm not going to be making a lot.
I'll have to think about it some more....you guys have some very good ideas....
so...who says you have to have square pans???
if you have 9x13...that cuts down to 9" square
12x18 ...12 square
(get the drift....and of course the leftovers can be made into cakeballs/truffles/bites/the name dejour the moment)
for stands...covered boxes already mentioned to which I would add:
> flower pots -- painted, or draped in fabric or covered in mmf
> candle stands
> glass blocks like they make window and walls from (borrow???, use 4 to make a square w/ lights inside??
> vases
> really large glasses (those monster margarita glasses and the like)
> wine glasses
> big bowels
> juice cans, big or little, (empty) covered w/ paper or something
> any thing you can balance something on top of for that matter (here kid..stand still!)

<P>mY general idea on that is it is an excuse to get some supplies and then I'll try and sell it to other people since I now have it as an option. If you think you might want some square cake supplies for the future then just get them. (I can't cut straight enough with a knife to make my own square cakes)

I think Doug has many cool and innovative ideas. Not so sure how the big "bowels" would work, though. LOL Thanks for giving me a grin, Doug. ![]()
Don't spend any more money than you have to on this small order.
Use the half sheet pan and cut it down, or can you 'square' off some of your round cakes after baking them?
I also agree that you should try to glue on a square board of sometype to a round plate. I know this sounds crazy, but what about sometype of small, tiered plant stand you can use that would be able to support the cakes?
Have you looked at the gallery section for square wedding cakes to get ideas yet?
Good Luck!
