Okay, I did my first FBCT today and I messed up and I am hoping that someone can help me. I don't know if I am going to be able to explain this right, but, I will try. I did the image mirrored, put wax paper over it, outlined the pic the way that it states to in the article section on CC. I filled in the photo with the buttercream the way that I understood it to, put it in the freezer, after smoothing out the back and adding the extra frosting, etc. When I took it out, it peeled away very nicely, but, you can see lines from where I iced it with the piping bag. Did I do something wrong? How can I smooth it out on the transfer all the way? I don't know if I have to push it harder when I add the extra frosting for the back or what. I hope this makes sense. I really want to be able to do this. Please help! You all are so awesome that I really think there is someone on here that can help me out!
This is a personal preference, but before you add the second layer of icing to your transfer I smoothout all the lines, this way I can work color by color without the worry of smearing them together. Then I add the second layer and put some pressure on it (not to much again b/c I am paranoid that I will smear the image) And good to go.
Not sure if it is the "right" way or not, but it works for me.

I had the line problem too when I first tried this, but had excellent results after that. Here's what I did:
1. I used a bigger tip size to fill in bigger areas and made an effort to avoid creating lines. I did this by sort of smooshing the tip into the icing areas and applying pressure so that the lines sort of squeezed themselves out. (Hope this makes sense.) It didn't fully get rid of the lines, but it helped.
2. After I finished the entire fbct, I liften up the image to see the bottom and what it looked like. Any lines I saw I used a toothpick to blend them together.
3. Then I chilled it for a little bit until it was safe to add the back layer of icing. I pushed down enough to really set the image in.
4. After freezing and transferring, I used the hot knife if there were any imperfections at that point, which were very, very few.
I hope I haven't made things more confusing, but just hang in there and keep at it. They'll get easier!

That totally makes sense. Thank you! I will try it tomorrow!
After filling in, before adding the layer of icing over the back, I smooshed the icing down with my finger (I guess this would be instead of smoothing it with the spatula) I was afraid that I might smear the image a little, and someone here gave me that tip. I still had a few lines, but it was pretty good.
I had the same problem when I did my first FBCT last week.
When I did my FBCT, I put it in the freezer inbetween the steps. I did the outline, put it in the freezer, did the first color, put it in the freezer, did the 2nd color (only did 2 colors), put it in the freezer, did another layer of frosting, put it back in the freezer, then flipped it and put it on my cake. I take it I should try smoothing it out between the steps just before I put it in the freezer?
