This is a silly question, but it is my first time using ribbon on a cake.

What would you use to attach silk ribbon around the cake when using buttercream icing???

And, what would you use if your cake is covered in fondant???

I've never used ribbon on a cake.

What about piping gel? Just a thought...

I have only done this once. I covered the back of the ribbon with masking tape (so the the oil from the icing doesn't seep through) then to attach the ribbon I used little dots of buttercream.

I do this a lot. You have to cover the back of the ribbon with something or it will absorb grease from the buttercream. I've never done jtb94's masking tape trick, but I might have to try that next time. I use narrow strips of waxed paper behind the ribbon, and I use a corsage pin to hold the ribbon at the back, if it's a ribbon that won't stay in place with a dot of buttercream.

hmmm... this is good to know.

Would 2-sided tape work to hold the waxed paper on the ribbon?

I have never done this, but I do remember reading on CC that you can iron the waxed paper right onto the ribbon. That way the ribbon and wax paper will adhere to one another. Jodie

What about with fondant icing? Would you still have to use something to seperate the ribbon from the icing?

yep, in some of my ribbon that is too wide I fold it over in 1/2 and put a strip of double sided tape in there to hold ribbon in a fold and then just a dab of icing on end of ribbon to hold onto cake and then a bit of double sided tape on that to hold the other end of folded ribbon to finish it off clean. Hope that made sense to you! icon_lol.gif

Nope, just dab a bit of royal on fondant wrap your ribbon around and put ends on R.I. and once it's dry it's good.

with b/c you wouldn't need anything to help it stick, if so dab a small dab of water with an artist's brush and that should do it.
