when stacking a cake...the bottom cardboard plate ends up being a slight bigger than the actual cake on it. i noticed that on my last stack cake, the middle tier was 9 inch cake, w/a 9 inch plate underneath it that i bought at the store. should it be cut down even more prior to setting the cake on it and decorating? or do you just try covering it w/frosting and borders?
thnx

Usually, by the time you have frosted the cake and applied a border, the extra edge of the board is well hidden.

I agree with JoAnn. I never cut mine down.

My sister and I have come across this. We have done two things. We've have cut down to size and we've used a smaller cake board. We blame it on the altitude, the cake sometimes just shrinks from the side of the pan. Most of the times the frosting and borders do a very good job of covering it.
