There are 2 Rules when making a truly red icing.

1. Food Coloring Quality
Here at the cakecentral.com shop we sell high quality Americolor food coloring products, which are truly the best. Try out the "Super Red"... you will never fail to get a Super Red icing again!

2. Time
Darker colors will need extra time. If you are making a black, a red or navy, its best to color your icing and let it sit for 24 hours. This will give the icing enough time to soak up the color and be really bright or dark.

Since you are in the middle of making the cake right now, you may try to add a very tiny bit of black or brown to the color, be aware, this will dull the over color, but it will darken it.

Also, something I learned here at CC and have tried is to get red, start with making it orange. Start with orange and then add your red to it if you are using Wilton...best of luck. You can see my red VW in my photos and that is how it got so red.

Great advise on the orange color!!!
I'll have to try it. I worked at a bakery and I made all decorating icing the day before I used it and the red defeniatly gets darker with time!!!!!
