I tried to torte my sheet cake with my new Agbay and it shredded it all to pieces. What did I do wrong? Any tips?

Unfortunately I can not offer a reason why but I can tell you that this is why I do not use a leveler. I have never liked the way they work...I just use my very sharp Pampered Chef serrated knife while it's still in the pan. I use the top of the pan to guide my knife. I never have trouble that way. I just don't think they levelers are sharp enough for me....

I would try to e-mail the company and see what they say. Let us know if you do that and what their response is. I've been wanting to get one of those levelers for a while now.

Hopefully this isn't offensive... but did you have the blade the right way? Alice has one and it is like slicing melted butter... she has torted cakes almost paper thin.

That is a video on the proper use of it.
Make sure your blades are facing the right way. I've never heard of anyone having a problem like this.

ChristaPaloma that link is not bringing up a video for me. I know I have seen it before but can't find the link.

Are you trying to push the leveler through the cake or or you doing a little sawing motion back and forth and your taking the leveler through the cake? The blades are serrated so they do need to have a little bit of a sawing motion going.

So sorry to hear your having problems with it, from what I hear it is suppose the be a great little tool

I have an agbay and it's great! Use sawing motions, pushing the blade through the cake. When you get to the end, slow down a bit, using long strokes, so that it doesn't crumble at the edge. Be sure that the blade is secure, not loose.

Strangely, clicking on it doesn't bring up the video.
Just copy & paste into the address bar at the top of the page and it will
bring the video in.

I love my Agbay. The only time I've had a problem with it is when I tried to cut through a very cold cake. It took a lot of effort. When the cake is room temp, it cuts so easily. I also keep a hand on top of the cake just in case.

I didnt like the way mine worked even with the sawing motion. It always tore the cake up. I use the serrated knife which works better for me. I think its one of those things that you either love it or hate it.

I don't own one unfortunatly I can't afford one but when someone mentioned this product the other day just by saying Agbay I searched Google and watched the video and checked the prices OMG! lol Anyway just like with any leveler or torter you need to make sure you're useing a sawing motion just as you would with a knife icon_smile.gif

Good point, paolacaracas. If the cake is still warm, it will crumble. Let it cool for at least a few hours.

Call or e-mail the lady from agbay she will help you. They are very good with customer service. I haven't had any problem with mine and I love it!! I always wrap my cakes in saran wrap and let them rest and settle for at least a day and then level at room temp.

also the blade needs to be clean, the first cut taking off the very top can leave a thin layer of wet cake on it, that needs to be removed, the little tools she has to do that is invaluable. hold the cake steady and use long sawing actions side to side making your way through. i have noticed if i use short strokes its not a completely smooth cut.

it was the first time I used it (except for a trial cupcake)- blade was clean.. I kind of sawed - but really pushed it more - so that's problem number one.. The second is that it was a fresh cake - just a couple of hours old. I'll make a second one and try to cut it tomorrow.

Thanks for the tips - I've heard such great things about it and I was so excited to use it...

at least now I have lots of scraps for cakeballs!!

Don't know what happened there! I have an agbay and I've cut through fresh soft cakes, frozen cakes, torted into three layers at one time (I have the two blade slicer). Never have had this happen. I've used slicing motion and pushing motion without any problems. Sorry you are having problems. The only advice I have is next time start at the corner and slice through on the diagonal (corner to corner).

I just received mine last week and already used it twice. I love it! I would try all the wonderful tips that the ladies suggested and if it still doesn't work for you, give Maureen a call. She was very helpful and extremely nice when I spoke to her. Good luck!

all I have to say is that Agbay customer service rocks!!

I just listened to my cell phone messages... just hours after posting this message - Maureen called me!! On a Sunday of a holiday weekend..

that is absolute customer service that cannot be beat!! I'm blown away!

Maureen - if you see this, I'll call you on Tuesday - no rush and no need to interupt your holiday.

Thanks!!
