Okay, this seems like a ridiculous question to me, but I've got to ask it...

Aren't swiss dots just, well, DOTS?

Why are they called SWISS DOTS?

I've seen them used in a triangular pattern, and I thought that the pattern was the distinction between just saying dots and swiss dots, but then I looked up a bunch of examples in the gallery, and many people use the term "Swiss dots" for just any random placement of dots.

WHat am I missing here?

I believe "Swiss Dots" mean "Raised Dots". Not to show my age, but when I was a teenager "Dotted Swiss" was really big in dresses. The material was a light material, with raised dots on it, where the ones that weren't raised were just polka dots. It's making a bit of a comeback now (which really shows my age icon_lol.gif )

Tiffysma is exactly right. Which shows my age, too icon_wink.gif

We LOVED those dotted-swiss dresses, didn't we? I think it was the texture that appealed so much. A 3-d fabric was amazing!

icon_lol.gif Oh, yes, I had 3, in different colors with shoes to match!! I even had made one of them. I was a bridesmaid in a wedding and had a long, yellow one with the "empire" waist!! Gosh, I'm getting old!! you notice I didn't admit to actually BEING old! My mother just turned 84 and my brother told her she was going to have to decide that now she is old and her reply was "Well, I WILL NOT!" icon_lol.gif Gotta love it!

Thanks for clearing that up everyone!

Now I know what to call that dress that my mother kept from my childhood. It was a really neat "dotted swiss" pattern. We used it for my daughter's 1st Easter.

Oh, and let's not forget the white socks with lace around the edges. The socks would always ride down into the shoe and the laced itched like crazy. icon_lol.gif

My goodness! We are all hinting at our ages! However, I don't remember the dotted swiss very well..... but I do remember pixie cuts..... My grandmother, God bless her, was supposed to take me to have my hair thinned, but instead I came home with a pixie cut and a 24 inch pony tail. I didn't mind (My oldest sister, 10 years older, used to brush my hair and always used that time to knock me upside the head with the brush if I had done anything wrong), but it was the one and only hissy fit I had ever seen my mother have. Ahhh... the good old days!

I am soooo glad that I didn't live as a child in the days of the bow! When in high school, my friends and I used to poke fun at the GIANT bows that girls wore on the back of their prom dresses. I was such a tomboy!

Now, as a mom of a 3 year old, I'm the biggest proponent of "girlie" bows, dresses, etc. Luckily, my daughter loves to dress up!

Oh, yes I remember that. The question in my mind was why those stupid socks always wound up in the shoe like that. Actually, it was my mother question whenever it happened. I didn't have an answer then, and I still don't fifty odd years later. I remember thinking how lucky little girls were when they started wearing tights instead of ankle socks.
