I want to make a cake of a mature duck. I would like to add some feathers, especially tail feathers. Has anyone done this or have any ideas? Thanks for any help.
I'm going to have to watch this topic ~ I sure needed it a few weeks ago! I made a goose and ended up painting the feathers on the sides. I did try to make feathers for the tail. I just freehanded them and stuck them onto the tops of the dowel rods I had covered in fondant. Here is a pix ~ I'm not sure how much you can see from it.
Anyone else?

I made the feathers on my peacock cake (see pics) doing the following
thread sausage of sugarpaste onto wires
then roll flat, rolling from the centre (wire) outwards. Make sure edges are really thin.
cut to shape of feather
using nail sissors make downward cuts, pulling sissors back, to slightly stretch . make some cuts smaller than others.
the smaller feathers didn't have wire in them but made the same way
let dry then colour

Earlene made feathers using rice paper. You can see them on the groom's cake with the shotgun shells. She may have instructions available and you may want to ask her. She is great about getting back to you.

Hey Torki, What a cool bird! I actually used your cake as one of my inspriations for the peacock I did last week! Great job!
Thanks for your help on feathers. The peacock is wonderful. I will try and hope mine is half as good. Thanks everyone!!!
I made tiny feathers on my angel wings (Best of Show cake). You could do them larger, and it wasn't hard at all...
They look like they took a lot longer than they did.
Wow BrandisBaked that cake is awsome. How did you do the wings??
I made a basic wing shape out of fondant, and then made rows of feathers.
For each row, I'd roll out a long piece and cut it 3/4 of the way to the top - about 1/4 inch intervals. Once I did the entire length, I snipped each 1/4 section (or feather) into a triangle tip. Then I took a scoring tool and made lines in each feather to make them look like actual feathers. I laid each row of feathers on the wing shape - starting at the bottom and overlapping them slightly. And then I laid the entire wing over some aluminum foil in the shape I wanted until it dried.
Each wing took me about 15 minutes to make - tops.
BrandisBaked thank you. I am going to give this a try. Can't wait to try.
