I'm getting ready to make some roses, I haven't decided how I want the arrangement yet. The order is for a full sheet and red roses. The lady it's for will be 75 and this will be pretty much her first "birthday cake" (surprise party) I want this to be extra special. I'm either going to make a group of roses and rose buds with leaves all the way across the top of the cake or I'm going to make a vase and have a rose bouquet in it. My question is, I know that gumpaste itself is not edible but if I mixed it 50/50 with fondant is it? The people I'm doing this for might not remember to take off the flowers before serving.

What do you all think?

Missy

Gumpaste is actually edible, although not very tasty!! I like to do a 50/50 mix because I find it easier to work with when making flowers and such!

Actually gum paste is edible, it just is a bit crunchy. GP roses are often constructed on wire, which makes them really inedible.

50/50 is edible. The GP makes the flowers dry more firm and a bit faster, the fondant keep it from drying completely, and gives a bit more time to handle it before it dries out.

You can construct them on the table using a cone of 50/50.

I made the cones on toothpicks. When they were starting to dry, I pulled them off and dried them on paper towels. Then I could put them back on a skewer or toothpick to finish the petals. Then, the rose could be removed from the pick- completely edible. No need to remove them from the cake.
