How can I get a nice midnight blue color? I've got Wilton's royal blue, but that's too light. I am making a baby shower cake that's two tier stacked. It's supposed to look like the nighttime sky. I'm going to use white buttercream to make the cloud borders. I have already made the gold lustre dust painted stars which will be stuck into the clouds all over the cake. There will be a fondant moon on top with a little baby asleep under a blanket on a cloud of buttercream. I have everything planned..but I just can't get a good nighttime sky color! icon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

Somebody please help!

Yes... it made it turn an ugly greyish blue color. It got the darker blue that I wanted. I just didn't like the nasty grey shade.

Wait till you see it on your lips and teeth.

sorry, couldn't resist.

It takes lots of dark blue and a bit of black to get midnight. Royal blue is a bit too light.

I add Wilton Purple to the Royal Blue color and it can make a fairly dark blue. I have also added a little black to this mixture to make it darker. Hope this helps, I have not used other brands as Wilton is only one available in our stores, but as soon as I'm running low I'm going to order the Americolor (?) that everyone on here raves about, can't wait to try them out. icon_biggrin.gif

I've made a midnight blue using Wilton royal blue and black. I started by making the blue as dark as I could get it and then added a bit of black frosting I had already made up. Then I just kept adding blue or black until I got the color I needed. It did take a lot though.

I just wish Wilton made a nice dark bluecolor. That would be so much easier. Oh well....guess we can't get everything we want! Thanks for the tips everyone! I'll post a pic when I'm done. The cake is due next weekend.

Americolor makes a navy blue that's really nice. I switched from Wilton to Americolors. I just wish my local shops carried it but the CC store's price is really good.

Good luck with your cake!

My only problem is that the closest retailer of Americolor products is in Shreveport, Louisiana - an hour away!
