Ok so this isn't a cake decorating issue... but its close. I am entering an apple pie contest tomorrow and I want to do something clever for the decor. I've got an awesome recipe of which I am very proud, however I want to make it pop out in looks too.
Usually when I make apple pie, I use part of the dough and cut out an apple and leaf shape for the center of my pie. My top layer is always a lattice. I'm thinking of doing a heart with an American flag cut into it for the contest.
My question is this, do you think it will be ok to brush some color on the 'flag' before/after its cooked. I'd like to emphasize the stripes with red and the star part with blue. Has any one ever painted on cooked pastry?
Overall, I want a rustic/Americana feel.
I've got a pretty cobalt blue stone pie plate that it will bake and be served in.
Any advice would be great!

Will you please let us know how it comes out? If you could post a picture, too, that would be great. It sounds like a winner, but I'm no expert when it comes to pies. Thank you!
I make these pizza thingies for my kids.....I take bread dough and fill it with pizza toppings and roll it up and I mix food coloring with egg whites and let them paint on it....the color stays after it's baked perfectlly.....I've never had it run as long as you don't put a ton of it on and have it dripping down onto other portions you don't want colored it should be fine and it also gives the bread a nice shine when it's done baking.....I don't see why that wouldn't work for pie crust too???
I'm probably too late, but could you use the colored sugar crystals? Red, Blue and clear?
