HELP!!! I have been talking about making a change and getting a job at a local bakery . . . and now I find out Sprinkles is opening a shop nearby and is accepting applications!!!

I only have experience working in veterinary medicine for the last 15 years . . . anyone have suggestions on how to make my resume stand out???

My boyfriend says I should make a "cake" resume with the cakes I have done, what the work entailed, etc.

Any other suggestions???

A cake portfolio would be a good idea. Have pictures of the cakes you have done and like your boyfriend said, include details of the cake.

Also in your application letter, you should make mention of your work ethics - attention to detail, focussed, etc.

Hope someone else can give you more suggestions.

Goodluck!! Your very brave. Just think how much you will learn actually working with cakes on a daily basis. You'll do well if you believe in yourself as you definately have the talent!!

I am from MI, what is Sprinkles?? Sounds yummy. As far as the job, for sure take a portfolio of all your cakes, in the cover letter you can mention your passion for cakes. BEST OF LUCK!!!!!

I hope you get the job, and that it is everything you want it to be. I agree with the other posters...talk up your work ethics and enthusiasm for cakes. Put some pictures on your resume.
I have to ask...do you get negative comments about your career change? When I mention how I'd like to quit my "day job" and take a job at a bakery, I usually get a response of "Well, you'd probably get tired of that after a while." I've been working at the same job for 15 years, (one I don't particularly like) so I have a track record of sticking with things. And I never LOVED this work to begin with.
Oh well. Good Luck. Go for that job!

I think your boyfriend has great idea. It shows your creativity. But, I would also include a typed sheet along with it.....just in case! LOL My first thought was "Why are you leaving your present job?" Of course, "I", as well as other CCer's know, but, be prepared to answer this question.

GeminiRJ: You know I left nursing after 25 years; 15 of those, teaching. People were AMAZED that I would quit a "good paying job" to be the Pastor's secretary at my church. My answer: It's what I WANT to do! Good Luck and I hope you find a bakery soon!

Actually, quite the opposite. I work at an emergency animal clinic . . . I work 8pm to 8am Fri, Sat and Sun. I miss out on a lot with my family and boyfriend, which makes me want to make a change. Also, I think I can use a break from the industry I am in. Working in a day practice was not nearly as hard as working in emergency medicine. Its emotionally draining sometimes . . . and I think at some point everyone either leaves this industry or takes a break. Its great to have basically the entire week off from work, but I don't share a day off with my boyfriend and after a year it has taken a toll on our fun time together. I want to be able to better balance my home life, job, and relationships.

Its a bakery that started out in Beverly Hills. Its not a place that really does any decorating . . . all their cupcakes are iced simply and then have a little fondant dot on top. They are all about taste and incredible service. Its a huge deal out here . . . people stand in line forever to their cupcakes. Celebs have had them flown out to places, etc.

Cross your fingers for me. I ended up sprucing up my old resume and then writing a cover letter. I explained how I feel my work experience would apply to this position, and then attached a resume with all my cakes. Even though the job won't really require any creativity for decorating, I did it to hopefully stand out.

I also found out the cake store/bakery that I purchase supplies at is looking for a decorator--and they train! Needless to say, I applied there as well.

Thanks for your support and cross your fingers!
