Looking to serve 60-70 guests
3 TIERS - 14", 12", 10" with the 14" & 12" stacked and the 10" on columns
butter pound cake for the 14" & no filling, chocolate cake with chocolate fudge filling for the 12", and marbled & no filling for the 10"
all buttercreme icing (white & cream/ivory)
all flowers will be roses (white & cream/ivory) and done in gumpaste / fondant
How much would you charge for this cake design?
How much would you charge for just the cake with buttercreme & fillings and not the gumpaste/fondant flowers?
And yes I know pricing varies by geographical area. I'm just trying to get a general idea on what others would charge. To see if I'm being too expensive or to cheap - since this will be my first wedding cake.
If you have any other comments / suggestions / feedback I'd love to hear it.
for starters thats alot more cake then you would need to serve 70 people. The 14 inch will serve that alone (thats a 4 inch high cake) By my charts you should only need a 10, 8 and 6.
Pricing starts at $3.50 per serving. And for this cake i would include the flowers at no extra charge.
This is an afternoon wedding that will be a little less formal, so I'm expecting larger than normal serving sizes. A friend of the Bride is doing all of the planning / leg-work. I tried to push smaller sizes but the friend insisted on a 14-inch cake.
For the sizes I gave and the gumpaste flowers (that I'm ordering online and not making) and the fact that they are ordering it with less than 30 days until the wedding... I am thinking the estimate will be around $500.00, less the small refund of any equipment they return (colums, plates, etc). Oh and this will also include delivery / set-up (to a town 20-25 minutes away).
How many people would you say the 14, 12 & 10 wouldl serve - 150?

In round numbers, a 14/12/10 will serve 170-175. Even if they cut these big, that's still way too much cake for 70 people.
I use 14/10/6-or-8 for weddings for 100 (top tier not counted).
I use 14/12/8 for 125; 16/12/8 for 150.
I am not very good at pricing and so I can't really help you there. I know that 3.50 per person is standard around me though. I did want to know if you have ordered online and if so what site would you recommend? I am thinking about doing this soon but I am worried about reliability and quality.
if they want it that big charge i would still charge them the per serving slices. $500 total
If they served party servings of 1 1/2 x 2 x 4in (and believe me when I say that's a good serving!), you wouldn't need a cake any bigger than 12, 10, 8 and that's going to get you at least 80 servings (including the top tier)! The 14, 12 & 10 is going to get you at least 120 party servings - way, way, waaaaaaaay too much cake!!! BTW, make sure you charge for this cake at the equivalent number of wedding servings because they are getting more cake than usual for the same price otherwise (which for the 14, 12 & 10 from me would be $581 + cost of flowers)!

Absolutely! My pricing .... wedding, sheet, birthday, whatever ..... is based on the Wilton Wedding Chart number of servings. My attitude is they are welcome to cut it as big as they want, but if they cut it bigger and need more cake, there is no rhyme or reason why *I* have to eat the expense!
in my area i would charge $400 for that cake (with 14,12,10 inch tiers). since you live in the DC area, i'd say $500 sounds like a good price.
and i would see if they would consider just doing a 12, 10, 8. i think when its all said and done they wouldn't even be able to notice a difference in size and they'll have a more appropriate number of servings. for a cake with those size tiers i would charge about $275.00, so you'd prolly be able to get $325 -$350.
Ok, after giving the $500.00 estimate I was informed that the Bride is only looking to spend around $300.00.
I told them that if they kept the same sized tiers and replaced the gumpaste roses with buttercreme ones, then it would knock off $150.00.
So we'll see how that goes.
Thanks everyone for all the input. I'll keep you all updated. ![]()
