So I make my cake for the bake sale...the new character pan from the movie "Cars". It took me literally hours. (I don't know how people who aren't cake decorators do character cakes.) I took it to church and was crushed when they only priced it at $10. But I tried to put my hurt aside and work on the dinner that went along with the sale. I have to admit I wasn't all that successful.

It sold very quickly to another member of the church that I don't know all that well. After the sale was over I happened to see the woman walking out of the church with her son beaming over the cake I made. Turns out it was his b-day and he just loves the movie. If the cake hadn't been only $10 he wouldn't have had a cake at all.

I how it sounds like a "made for TV" movie but I realized that price doesn't always reflect value.

What a sweet story. With the amount of time we spend on this stuff, it mostly is a labor of love anyway. If we didn't get enjoyment, we wouldn't do it anyway.

Glad to hear that happy ending. I'm sure it was not coincidence that you saw the fruits of your labor.

It's nice to hear a positive story after all the seemingly unappreciative recipients of cakes we hear about icon_lol.gif

I just started doing 3D cakes, and I love to do them. So when I sold the first one for only $16, my DH said that I shouldn't have sold it so cheap. To me, cake decorating is my artform. I used to do alot of painting and drawing, but now since I started doing 3D cakes, its my new creative outlet. So when I sell a cake, its not how much I can get for it, its more like how much will the recipient like it? I know I could charge more for my cakes, but then that would take the fun out of it because it would kust be about the money then. I love to see the recipient's face when they get the cake!

I agree with Nicole0305, nothing can replace the great feeling that you get when a the recipient see their cake for the first time. They beam with happiness & joy and we get the wonderful knowledge that we, as creater, brought something special to that person day. Those looks and feelings of happiness are irreplacable.

That is a sweet story. I always say, God is in every little thing, and every big thing.....God is in everything.

I bet that little boy loved his cake. I made that for my ten-year-old's birthday, and he was so excited. His birthday was all about that movie, and I was so glad they came out with that pan in time for his birthday.

I remember that my family always yelled at me for all the time I spent making cakes. So, one year they bought a cake for my son and I wrote happy birthday on it. He then said "my mom loves me because she always bakes a cake for me." I have never not made a cake since then for friends or family who ask for it. I don't care how much time or money it costs.

I agree, the money is ok, but most of the time it's how the person feels about your cake that's much more important.

I highly recommend finding an organization to donate a cake. I've chose SAFE (shelter for abused families), once a month I deliver a large sheet cake so that they can celebrate all the children's birthdays for the month, otherwise they would not get a cake. I have been thinking for a couple of months I would also like to create a "birthday fund" so these kids could also get a birthday present. Can you imagine as a child having your birthday go by, with no present or even a cake! However, that will take more time than I have at the moment, but one day I hope to make sure every child in SAFE gets a birthday present.

Thanks
Joanne

I have to agree with everyone on here, I learned how to decorate recently from my grandma. She always made cakes all of her grandkids when we were younger - i have now made cakes for some friends/family and know how happy it made my grandma too see the smiles and happieness of the cakes -- i dont remember many of the gifts but i remember the cakes perrectly

Hi,

I think you could probably check your phone book for your local abuse shelter, if you don't see anything in there you can call Social Services in your area, they should be able to give you a number. If you have no luck with that, PM me where you live and I will check with our Director, she will know.

THanks
Joanne

That's a beautiful story. It easy to forget about the joy people get out of what we do when we focus so much on the "business" side of things. Even if we don't make money on the cakes, we're still building our reputations. I think donating cakes to shelters is a nice way to be a blessing and to stay grounded as well.
