Just out of curiosity how long has everyone been decorating cakes and how did you get started. I have been doing it for 6 1/2 years and still have so much to learn. I started by doing my own families cakes and then stumbled upon a cake store and bought some magizines/books and taught myself. I love doing cakes it is my passion. ![]()
I started last summer and took the Wilton cake decrorating classes. Now Im totally addicted! I just thought It would be cool to do. I needed some type of artistic out let and I couldnt draw or paint or do anything like that, but I make some pretty damn impressive cakes! ![]()
I have helped my mom (who has her own cake business) for about 15 years, and I started my own cake business 5 years ago. ![]()
My mother has her own cake business and during the summer holidays I would be forced to help out, and I hated it. But now that I am grown and a mother myself I love decorating cakes and hope to one day have my own business. Oh I rambled on and didnt asnswer the question Haha. I have been decorating for about 15 years on and off.
I started after seeing a demonstration at a luncheon, and asked the lady if she gave lessons. My kids were in second grade at the time, and I wanted to be able to make them cool cakes. The boys have just now finished their freshman year in college...so it's been 11 or 12 years. And I found out real quick why cakes at the bakery cost what they do. It's not just open a box of mix, bake, and throw on some icing!
Otter, be prepared to deal with the same kind of people, because they'll be ordering cakes! Some customers are a dream to work with, and others will make you want to pull your hair out. But at least you'll be doing something you like, which helps to take the sting out when dealing with obnoxious people.
Wow, I was just about to start a thread like this. I am so amazed by the talent here and I wondered if it just comes naturally ('cause I don't have that) or if it comes with experience. I started last summer but have only made maybe 4 cakes since the end of course 3. I am taking the gumpaste class in June. I wonder, how many of you have taken actually culinary or pastry classes? Or is it all just from working with cakes?
I started decorating back in the early 80s.
Gosh, I am gettin old!!Took the Master class with Wilton in 1984. I could hardly afford it back then. I saved and saved my pennies to get there. It has really jumped in price!! Decorated for awhile then got out of it for a number of years. Now I am jumping in again with both feet and I just love it! I forgot how creative you can be on a cake. wish I could get to IL to take more classes now!! ![]()
Ive been decorating since i was 18, so about 9 years now off and on. I took 1 wilton class because i coulsnt seem to get down how to do a proper rose (apparently i was turning my nail the wrong way!) but other than I am pretty much self taght, reading books etc. Ive seen some of the video Tutorials online and they are amazing, I wish I had those to watch when I 1st started out
Wow, Erica, I checked out your cakes, and you do wonderful work!
I started decorating cakes two years ago and the only reason I started was because I saw the professional caddy set at michaels and just thought it was so cute! So that's what I got for my birthday from dh then I ended up taking all three wilton classes and have loved doing cakes ever since!
