This is my first time using MMF. So far its great, but of course I've only mixed it up so far. I was just wondering though, that when I go to roll it out and work with it, can you use shortening instead of cornstarch? I've read in the article here that it says to use cornstarch, but I find that with most types of fondant, the cornstarch dries it out and makes it easier to tear. And from past experiences with fondant, I've found that even though the shortening can get a little messy, it is much easier to work with. Thanks for your help.

I use shortening instead and it works for me.. althought I do sometimes use powdered sugar if it is too sticky or soft.. I dotnt use cornstarch at all
i have just used confectioners sugar - works well for me, i think i have read on here some where that you can use shortening im not sure though, try it with a tiny amount and see what happens goodluck
I forgot to say that when I use the shortening I use a little on my hands and a thin layer on the board or counter
I use a little Crisco and it also seems to keep the color from coming off the MMF onto my hands.
I always use shortening, but make sure you only use a little bit.
I don't like using confectioner's sugar, because if you are rolling it out onto a rolling mat, the part that's touching your mat is going to be what's showing on the outside of your cake, and if it's colored fondant, you really don't want white powder all over your cake surface.
