My goddaughters open house is this afternoon and I'm finishing up the cake. Problem is I can't get my red,RED! Using satin ice fondant and wilton colors, please help ![]()
Do you have any liquid red food color like from the grocery store? Sometimes that works better than the wilton paste colors. I hate the wilton red...Or do you have a craft store close by? Sometimes they carry the little packages of red wilton fondant. I know it would taste bad, but maybe you could peel it off the cake.
With buttercream, I always make pink first then add the red coloring.
Red takes a long time to develop, and you have to add a LOT of coloring, and I've never had good success with Wilton reds anyway. If I were in your situation this AM, I would head on down to your local Michaels or AC Moore or Hobby Lobby, or wherever you shop, and pick up some Wilton pre-colored fondant. You can get a package that contains red and you won't be disappointed.
Thanks for the quick replies, you all. I knew I shouldn't have used wilton red but that's what was closest. My local cake supply just opened as I was typing this so I guess I'll heas that way and hope they carry powder colos (right after I give my food coloring a try.
See if they have the SatinIce fondant in red. It's a great shade, and there is no mixing involved.

Americolor gels...for me that is the only way to go for the dark colors (red, black, brown, etc) IMO if you use those you will not be disappointed and will never use anything else.
I'm with Delights, run down to your local Mike's and get some pre colored fondant and pick up some candy flavoring while you are there. Wilton's pre made fondant is very stinky and I have used the candy flavoring to mask that taste and got rave reviews. You do not want to use regular flavoring as those are water based and will make your fondant sticky. although, you can always add (very little) powdered sugar to combat that issue. The candy flavoring is oil based and much more user friendly with fondant. Best of luck to you. Also, I start my fondant or BC icing orange and then add red to get to the color red and use Red No Taste Red because you WILL use a whole bottle to get the red you want. HTH!
Thanks SamsGranny - I hadn't thought of using candy flavoring to mask the horrible stinking fondant, wow I didn't think I'd be learning anthing new this early today! ![]()
That is a really great idea!!! I'll have to tuck that one away.
Okay ladies (and gentlemen), I've finally taken some time away from the chaos and uploaded a few of my pics. The grad cake is now in my photos and the color turned out great! Exactly as our school colors appear!(as you can see in the photo on cake itself). Thanks so much you all!!GO CC!!!!!!
One more thing-I'll NEVER buy wilton color again. Also forgo to let you know how I got it to work out. Believe it or not, I decided hmmm, let me go through one of my many bags of things that I've purchased, used once and never put in it's proper storage place (due to rushing-the story of my life) and what d'ya know? I came across some americolor super red paste. Added it to the red or should I say pink that I was working with and voila, using less than 1/4 of what I had used of the wilton red, it was the perfect color
All I can say is WOW! Fabulous! I'm so glad it worked out for you!
