A Cute Observation On Cakes From Dh...

Last night I was waiting for a cake in the oven at like 11 p.m., and I said something about "Oh, I wish: Someday I'd like to see what it's like to work on a cake that ISN'T at 1 a.m.", and then I went into sort of a list of all the things that I have to do before the actual decorating starts, adding that the final decorating is the Really Fun Part, but there's so MUCH that you have to do before you can sit down at a clean counter with a blank slate filled and frosted cake and just decorate it for the finale.
And DH looked up with the wisdom only he could have and said, "It's like body work on a car. The painting is the fun part, but the body work is 95% of the job." HAHA. I had to laugh.
He hit the nail exactly on the head, of course.
Today I'm doing the body work on a white and royal blue scroll work cake with fountain set-up and callas. Tomorrow night the fun starts. 
That was a very good and accurate observation. i am always saying I wish someone could bake the cakes for me and I could just decorate. My husband says when I get rich I can hire an assistant to bake...
I wish someone else could mix the frosting. You'd think I'd have the fore sight to make the frosting while the cakes are baking. But I usually have to make more as I'm decorating b/c I'll mis judge how much I need and run out too. A self cleaning kitchen would be totally awesome too. LOL.
I would definetly hire someone to make and color all the frosting and then clean all the tips and my mess when I was done.... My DH is always getting on to me about destroying our kitchen every weekend lol
I have a hand mixer too. there was something on here once 50% loved using their hand mixers and 50% loved their stand up mixers.....Not to change the subject, but what is a DH? Can u tell I'm a newbie :0

He's my hero--(remember the line in Ferris Bueller?--"Ferris Beuller, you're my heeeeeero."? I use that all the time--movie we watched the first night we met, too. )
Get this: Last night he came home from working a super long day, dirty and tired, and when I said my Kitchenaid was acting up (the paddle is dragging on the bottom in the mixing bowl because the inside gears are getting too loose), he promptly dismantled the whole thing right there on the kitchen counter, (I felt like a nurse/assistant: "Pliers!...Hammer!...Screwdriver--no not THAT one...") LOL, and took apart the whole motor and the gears and removed a snap ring (hard to do without the right tool), cut himself pretty good once, fixed the problem with a new washer, and put the whole thing back together. BeFORE showering or eating dinner that I had for him.
Now THAT is a Dear Husband (DH).
On topic: I don't mind the cleaning up, but just the whole amount of time leading up to the fun part seems looong when it's midnight and you're waiting for cakes to cool.
Oh--and my dishwasher last night shorted out, fortunately while I was still awake baking. This morning when I tried it again, it actually burst into an electrical fire UNDER the dishwasher. Interesting morning. Needless to say, when I called Maytag ("Hello? I want the Maytag Man. I mean the Actual GUY, and he better get here NOW"), I got transferred to someone in Corporate Headquarters, who immediately sent me our local repairman to check it out, and if he says it's not fixable (which he will--who wants an electrical hazard under the counter?), I'm getting a new dishwasher. Not that I'm thrilled--I'm totally less than impressed with every Maytag appliance we own. But I can't have something bursting into flames in my kitchen. That's just not in the schedule at all...lol
just thought I'd share all that--have a great night everybody.
oh ill have to brag a bit, my wonderful boyfriend thinks its just great that im into making cake so he always helps and makes the frosting/mmf or what ever i need he is my extra set of hands. Its soo nice to have him around. I will agree that all the work to get to decorating is not fun.

my hubby helps-----eat the cakes anyway!!!! He is very supportive, just not a great assistant.
My DH is very helpful when I make my cakes and he is very honest about my cakes. He will tell me if one is leaning or not sitting right etc. That is one thing we have in this marriage is the BRUTAL TRUTH no matter how bad it hurts our feelings..

Hi everyone
I'm new to this site... but I just LOVE it! I'm addicted already! I just wanted to mention that it's nice to see that I'm not the only one up all hours of the night finishing cakes. My friends and family think I'm crazy, but once I get started I can't stop. I'm just so excited to see the final product!
Anyway, it's also nice to read about all of your sweet DH stories. I love when my FI helps with the cakes. He is so good about offering new perspectives on how to do things... although sometimes I'm too stubborn to listen 
My husband is pretty great too. Not only does he help with the coloring, decorating, and cleaning, but he helps keep the kids out of the cake and frosting. Now that is a true DH. No lonnnnng sugar highs when he's on duty!!!! And it only took nearly 8 yrs to train him.
