How Do I...make My Base Icing Whiter?

I use a simple i guess it is a butter cream icing (has crisco, butter, vanilla, and powdered sugar) I have always came with a yellowish/off white looking icing when its on the cake. how can i make it whiter? I have 2 cakes to do by saturday and really need advice. i was thinking maybe getting white food coloring would that work? TIA amanda

You can get butter that is more white at a health food store, you can use clear vanilaa (I don't like the taste).

Some have found that a drop of violet changes the color to be more white, and you can try white color.

I think they do sell a whitener. I havent used it so I dont know if it works well or not. Or you could just do the all crisco buttercream with butter flavoring. (I use butter/crisco too because I think it tastes better!)
I dont think it is that noticable that it isnt white unless something else white is next to it.

JoAnnB gave you great advice. You can also add Wilton's White-White icing to your BC, just add that before you add your liquid or it will be too soft. It really makes your icing WHITE.

They were having this discussion on another board, and one of the girls tried adding WEDDING WHITE ( melted) candy melts, and she said it turned the icing WHITE white..... I can't wait to try it !

Add a few tiny drops of purple paste colour to it...it makes it whiter in colour....
Weird but true!

wouldnt adding that make the icing hard adding melted candy i would think that would make it to hard to deal with in butter cream but i am not really familar with the many ways to do things. i just decorate for family requests
