Has anyone done this? Or should I forget the idea well lets see obviously I need to dowel it. it shall be for this Friday so lets see. It's just that it would look great if it stood up, but then I need to photograph it (20 minutes drive) and then transport it 1/2 hour away. SOOO tempted. But I need to fondant the thing and I am experimenting with a nice moist cake......from scratch. That for me is the only positive thing with boxes is the unique moistness virtually unobtainable from scratch....But I wont give up yet. Still will it hold up.

I think I need to give it a miss I think it would be good for fruit, but have finally mastered a moist sratch cake and I bake day before delivery. So I think it is too soft. Better than a dry cake standing upright.........Never mind it would have looked amazing..

What if you used a big board and made your real cake in the shape of a tire lying down, and then a styrofoam one adjacent to it, standing up..covered in fondant. In fact, you could cover them both in fondant to look realistic?

LeeAnn, would you please share your moist scratch cake recipe with me. I have been toiling with Rose Birenbaums recipes but sadly not happy because they don't rise enough. Then I tried Dede Wilson and still not happy with that. I don't seem to have trouble with choc. cakes but the white ones are problematic. Thanks

Do you mean your trying to stand it upright like a tire - as in a car tire? Sorry if I'm confused. icon_biggrin.gif

Okay, let me share my experience. We just did a motorcycle cake for my son's 3rd birthday - a sculpted one. There is SEVERAL things I learned. LOL. One is that a circular 6" round won't stand up without flattening!! lol. I used the doctored chocolate fudge recipe, which is moist, and that probably only added to our deflated tires. THe other thing it started to do (the next day) was lean. Based on my experience, I'd try to find an alternative to us as opposed to cake, or use a pound cake recipe. The other thing that may work is to cut the circle cake in have horizontally, put support on that and then top top it with the other half (that still won't keep it from leaning to one side or the other though). Last year we did a tractor cake and used the big bagels covered in black mmf and they looked awesome - and withstood weight on top of them.

Yes upright it is actually for a photo and definetly box mixtures are tooo soft I think I will forget it it is not worth the hassle/ I would have cut a fraction of the bottom to make some support but I also want to torte it twice so it is better to be safe than sorry as I am embossing the outer edge and placing pearls on each join.
I just gave the example of a tyre as this is upright on a car.
