have you ever taken a picture of your cake.....displayed it ....then realized oops you could've at least cleaned your counter AROUND the cake.....or anything else you can see in the picture...like umm the kitchen floor???
I always use a silk fabric as background - light fabric for dark colored cakes and dark fabric for light colored cakes - just drape the fabric on the chair/sofa back and seat before placing the cake. I do this on all the cakes that can be assembled at home.
The cake in my pics with the blue dots .... 14 yr old daughter, who is a GREAT photographer in her own right, took the pic and came to the kitchen to let me know she had the photos for me. No problem. But when I looked at them later, I asked her if she couldn't have just flicked those couple of little blue pieces of icing off of the white cake first???? aaauuuggghhhh!!!
Oh well.... she works cheap! ![]()
I think the picture part is important. I'm constantly adding to my portfolio so I try to keep my pictures clean and creative. I took this one the other day, and I'm quite proud of it...actually I posted a few cupcake pictures and they were all a little unique in their own ways...*ooops*
...toot toot... ![]()
I went and got a projet board the one with three sides and some white satin and I set that up on the table with all the mess behind it and take nice clean pictures. no one sees my icing bags anymore its cheep and fast I stapled the fabric to the project borad so it it always ready open behind the cake and click.
I have to clean off my stove before I take pics and even then, you can often see the streaks left by the sponge on the back panel. I need to find a better place and get better lighting because the hood light above the stove isn't the ideal way to show off the cake... I'm usually in such a rush though, that the pic is a "quick, get it and GO!"

i agree, next to making and decorating the cake pics are certainly something i need work on, the project board is a GREAT idea i'm certainly going to try that
On another picture thread, I will try to find it, but anyway, several people used black 3-sided project board and then a black foamcore board on the bottom.
I bought a black twin size flat sheet a few months ago from Wal-Mart ($2.50). I just drape it on the counter and over a recipe holder placed on the bar behind. It works very well. I like to use that spot because I have some natural light coming in from the window.
project board- great idea. You people all have fantastic cakes to show off- definitely want to show them in good light and you do. I havent seen ALL the pics in here, but the ones I've seen, have not had ashtrays around them lol
I live in a small apartment-and I'm not in business (sigh, one day I might be good enough). When something I do is good enough to sell and put in portfolio, I'll start making fancy backdrops ![]()
I am now using a plain project board after seeing a thread on photography a while back. I always cleaned my table off but had my blinds and chairs in my pics. Now my chairs hold up the project board. I may try some fabric one of these days when i find some time. LOL
My problem is I have a digital that takes good pictures but for some reason when I post them on here the colors DO NOT show up the colors they really are so I don't post many either. Strange...................dodo dodo dodo dodo...........................
Sometimes I use the white cake box, before folding, as my backdrop. Most of the time I take my cake pics on my kitchen table. I always make sure the background is uncluttered. Usually I take my pics after the cake mess is cleaned up. One think I'll say about using the various backdrops is to be mindful of what you're getting in the shot when you go for the different angles. A straight shot from the front, with a backdrop, is often different than what you see when you go for the side shot. Chairs, shelves, bird cages, litter boxes (yes I saw that once too) etc etc can sneak in on those.
I love the frames some of you use for your cake pics. Although some of the angled shots I see almost make me dizzy.
