I am doing a graduation cake for saturday. There will be stars made out of gumpaste coming out of the cakes. They are connected to wires. Anyway, they want the stars to be silver and blue. I don't have my airbrush yet so can I spray paint them instead. They won't be touching the cake so I don't see the problem. I hope this is not one of those I need my head examined type questions, sometimes I forget who I am.

Thanks

It's not recommended to use a non-food safe product on a cake. You might be able to find spray, food safe, at a cake supplier or even at Micheal's (or the local grocery).

I don't know that I would use spray paint (that stuff can really smell, even when it's dry) and it's going to be so close to the cake. Can't you just color the gumpaste and use luster dusts to achieve the look you want?

Yes! Mix the Luster Dust with lemon extract or vodka. They'll be beautiful.

Or just color the gumpaste first or pain the stars with food color and a brush. I would not spray paint.

spray paint is not safe, even if they're just for decorations. it's so toxic. wilton make "spray" paint cans. or the previous instructions work too.

cover the stars with silver and gold foil, or even the gold or silver candy foil, cover with elmers glue (it dries clear) or not the foil should stay on its own. That way you can get the effect and no one will try and eat them. But Michaels does carry that spray color in small cans.

Wilton makes a color spray in a can. I know that you can get them at Michaels. I used them this past weekend and they worked well. Hope that helps.

Wilton's does not make silver, but you can use nu silver luster dust on grey stars. There is a company that makes silver spray, but you wouldn't have time to order it and get it for Saturday - you could keep it in mind for next time, though! PM me if you're interested - I'll go find the name (someone on this site recommended them and posted the info, but I wrote it in my cake notebook which is elsewhere right now!).
