To be safe, I would put 3-4 dowels in the bottom cake to support the cardboard.

Yes, that's right. And sprinkle powdered sugar on the 8" to keep the cardboard from sticking to the icing.

Good luck!

From what I have read, though, I have yet to do a stacked cake...

You should put a dowel in the center, going through your layers, to prevent sliding.

You don't want the cardboard to stick and pull off the frosting and/or bits of cake, because when you go to serve it, it's easier to disassemble it first, and also if it has cardboard underneath.

You don't want the cardboard to pull up the icing from the bottom cake. Are you transporting the cake? If you aren't, then you should be okay without having to dowel the center. If you are transporting it, I find it much easier to use the hidden pillars and assemble on-site. No dowels are necessary.

I would probably dowel it or use the hidden pillars. I don't know that I would trust myself to hold it steady that long.

I would definitely put a dowel down through the center - just to be safe. It's amazing how much cakes will move around even in small transports!!!
