Can you get square cake boards? I mean, they sell square cake pans, why not boards? I've never really seen them. Sure you can get sheetcake boards and cut them up - but I HATE cutting cakeboards. I haven't found a great method of doing it yet.... esp. when I put the cake on the cardboard and find out the cardboard is just a bit too big..... (like an 8 in cake on an 8 in cardboard but the cardboard ends up showing around the edges).

I was also wondering b/c I wanted to do one of those graduation caps and the instructions in the article here said you should cover an "8 in square of cardboard" with fondant. Can you buy square cardboards, or are you just supposed to cut them from sheetboards?

An easy way to cut them down is using a box cutter. I have one hanging on my rack with my measuring cups and my kitchen scissors.

I set the cake pan on the cardboard (if using a wilton pan with the flared edges, put the bottom of the pan on the cardboard....if you turn the pan upside down, the cardboard will be too big). I then run the box cutter down the side of the pan. The cardboard easily bends at the cut and I run the box cutter thru the opposite side.

Quick, simple and easier than scissors!

jescapades, thanks!

And thanks for your idea too indydebi.

I also bought the little exacto knife that's heated.... it's helped me sometimes cut through stuff - makes a bit of a burning smell sometimes, but it's been okay so far! I just would LOVE to not have to deal w/ cutting them at all - so I may look further into the website jescapades found.
Thanks!

I cut the cakeboards while the cake is on them to get the perfect size. I never want them to show, so I take my kitchen shears and easily cut around the edges about 1/4 smaller than the cake. It takes about 30 seconds.

I also have discovered that you can easily make your own bases in any shape using a heated exacto knife that are sold in craft stores. It glides through foamcore so easily...

WOW! Great site....I've been cutting mine down also, and really want to get away from spending the time doing that when I could be decorating! Thanks!

I use foamcore boards and I have a hard time getting the edges really nice and smooth and even. I use an exacto knife, but may have to try the heated one. The proble comes when I am cutting the base boards and if they are not exact, when you put ribbon around the outside it is not smooth looking.

Here in the UK we are really lucky and can get all kinds of shapes / sizes of boards and cards.

Here is a company I use and I note that they do ship internationally so I don't know if it is worthwhile for a bulk order or shared order with a friend.

www.almondart.com

Hope it is useful.
