I'm fairly new to the world of cake making/decorating. This doesn't put me down however-I'm ready for a challenge. I was thinking of making a cake for my class's last day of school party. First of all I was wondering if this is sensible. My plan is to make a cake covered in blue fondant to replicate the ocean. Should the fondant be marbled to give it a look similar to the ocean. Then, standing up at the top I was thinking of making a large sun possibly out of gumpaste. Is this the best way to make it? Finally, gumpaste shells as a border. Is this plan too complicated, and if so how could I down-size it and still make it impressive. How big should the cake be (there are 13 kids in my class plus the teacher)? Thanks, Alex

I would do the shells around it in chocolate......then they'll be more palatable to eat! I would probably stick a skewer into the gumpaste sun too before it gets too hard so you have something to stick down into the cake to hold it upright once it's dry!! I think it sounds like a wonderful Idea.......I'd prob. go with a ten inch cake!

Thanks. Should it be 1 or 2 tiered?

One tier should be sufficient for 13

I like the idea of the marbled fondant. Sounds very cool.

Another idea would be to make the sun out of a cookie decorated with royal icing and maybe extra cookies for the kids to take home?

I like all of your ideas! If you chose not to use fondant, you could do blue buttercream but not smooth it out. Make it look like waves. If you look at the sailboat baby shower cake in my pics, you'll see what I mean.

Good luck!! It will be very impressive to kids. I'm doing a swimming pool for my class.

Your cake turned out good. I'm sure the class will love it. I did a beach them one last year for the end of the school year. Didn't let my fondant sun dry long enough, but it worked.
