Not sure about the pin prick method, but you can print the font, cover it with wax paper, trace with piping gel and transfer it onto the cake that way.

I understand the wax paper, but how are you transfering it from the wax paper to the cake if you piped the piping gel on the wax paper? Are you freezing it and then laying it on the cake?

GLORIA2005,
I use the pin-prick method all the time now, for perfect writing everytime. This method will only work with CRUSTING buttercream. Once your icing has crusted over (about 10 minutes for mine), place the "pin-pricked" paper onto the cake and gently rub over the letters to transfer the dots onto the cake. Then, simply remove the paper and you're left with an outline to follow with your icing! If you've tried to use this method with a whipped cream of IMBC or SMBC, it will not work, as they do not crust over and the paper will stick to your cake! Hope this explanation helps!

StandingForJesus, you pipe the piping gel on the reverse side of the wax paper, then place where you want it on the cake. Press lightly, and the gel will imprint on the cake. When you lift, lift it straight up and off the cake, or it will smudge.
