ok, so i finally found some silver luster dust at a supply store today
, i am going to use it to fill in "color" on a car (a 62 classic convertible my hubby has that he worships
) on my father's day cake. I am new at this so i am going to use piping gel on parchement paper for my pattern (i have it all drawn out already) lay it on the cake and proceed with outlining... but first (before outlinging), I figure i will cut a stencil out and somehow sprinkle the luster dust where i need color? is that how you do it? small strainer? pinch it in your fingers? hire a magic fairy to sprinkle for me?
it is a small little pot of dust. I plan on using black gel/frosting combo to outline the shape of the car, will it stick over the dust? am i in over my head?
LOL any ideas, tips or suggestions are totally welcome here. i have completed my first wilton course so i am limited to buttercream... haven't done fondant yet or this wouldn't be an issue. please... all you experts, will you help the dorky newbie??? I want to produce a spectacular cake for hubby, not just cause i love him but i also want him to see that all the money i am spending on classes and supplies is worth it! LOL LOL LOL!!!!!
THanks all! ps... i am already totally addicted to this site and LOVING IT!
To get a real silver look, you need to mix the dust with an alcohol base. you can use vodka, gin, Everclear, clear vanilla, or some lemon extract.
Start with a small amount of dust, 1/4 tsp max, and a one drop of alcohol at a time to make paint.
the alcohol evaporates quickly, but don't over wet your surfaces.
wow! that looks FANTASTIC! what did you mix the luster dust with? what measurements? ok... i think i will try it if you can tell me how you mixed it and used it. that is right on buttercream? not fondant?
Yes on buttercream after it crusted. I just put very little dust , like a couple pinches and mixed it with a drop of vodka at a time until it was a nice painting consistancy and then brushed it on the cake.
