OK, you know how messy and difficult it can be to fill the piping bags sometimes. Well, the past few months, I get my bag filled with desired color frosting, put the tip on, start piping, AND SPLIT!! icon_cry.gif The bags split down the side every time! icon_mad.gif I just finished a cake. It only had two colors. BOTH times the bags split. It's not like they're old bags, because obviously I have to buy new ones every time I make a cake, because they split every time!! I buy the 9" vinyl bags, because they don't seem to hurt my hands as much. I went to put a post on the Wilton website forum, they wouldn't post it, and said they would send me replacements (2 months ago, haven't seen them yet!) What's up with this!?! I don't overfill, my frosting is not stiff, it was actually pretty thin for this cake tonight. ARGGGG I'm so mad...it's such a waste of time, money, icing, etc....then, try to get the icing out of the split bag...through the side, through the coupler...Ooohhh...just MAD. icon_mad.gif
Thanks for letting me vent, hubby just says "look, the cake turned out really nice". or "can't you buy your bags somewhere else?" Does it matter? They're all made by the same company. Whatever, thanks for letting me get this off my chest before I totally lose it! icon_twisted.gif

Well.......do you feel better now that you've got it all out?

I can't believe wilton has not sent you the replacements! I can believe that they wouldn't post what you wrote.

I don't know what to say, but I hope you have better luck next time.

How long has this been an issue?

Yeah, actually I do feel a little better! icon_lol.gif
This has been going on for about 2-3 months now. Thought maybe I got a bad batch or something, but I've certainly bought enough to rule out that theory!! Thanks for the support!! icon_smile.gifthumbs_up.gif

Sorry to here about the trouble, but have you tried to call wilton? I would call them and ask to speak to a manager directly. Or I would keep trying to post.

They are very picky about posting. If you keep posting they will just keep deleting. I had an issue with the 100 count bags but mine was that the whole batch had a melted hole in the middle. I received a new box within a couple of days. just contact them again.

I had trouble when filling them too full. Or not having my icing thin enough.

I now use one bag with the coupler and then put my icing in a separate bag. This way I can use one coupler and many different colors of icing just change tip as necessary. No more blow outs.

I have also noticed that the bags you get in the 12 or 24pack are thicker and somewhat sturdier than the rolls in the 50 or 100 pack.

I like the Ateco bags... they are sturdier. I use the Wilton ones too and have not had an issue with them breaking but for stiffer icing I really prefer the Ateco one.

Have you ever tried making your own bags out of parchment paper? I prefer using parchment when only using one color and tip. Easier clean up and no coupler necessary. Just pop the tip in the bag, fill with icing, and snip off the top! If you need to refill with more icing, simply straighten out the rolled end and refill. You can even cut your own leaf tip right from the paper without using a leaf tip!

I've had Wilton bags split on me before too. New and used. I also have a Wilton bag I've used over and over again. Who knows what the difference is. You'd think they'd be more consistant!

I haven't used the clear plastic disposible bags so I don't know if they're effective or not. My guess is that they work fine.

To each his own.

I hope you get some sort of restitution from Wilton though. They owe that to you!! If they don't VERY soon, if it were me, I think I'd find another brand to try!

I'm glad you vented here! So many supportive people here!!!
Hang in there mhill!!!

I got this tip in another post - place a sheet of plastic wrap on the table about 10 or 12 inches wide. The blob your icing onto the plastic wrap and roll it into a tube. Shape it to fit into the bag and then close up the end. Then drop it into your bag. This way when and if the bag breaks then the icing will not go everywhere - it also helps with cleaning resusable bags. I just started doing this and love it. It is so much neater and cleaner.

I had this happen to me as well a while back. I was told to wash them out without submerging or letting them soak in the water during clean up. Since then I haven't had a problem. HTH.

I had this happen to me also. I bought the 129.00 kit to take the Wilton Class and every bag in there split. It was the hardest thing to go to class, have everything ready to go and the bags split. I did e-mail Wilton and they sent me 1 set, but I had two sets and they did not replace the second set. I know the feeling, I got mad also.

As for filling your bags I like Slk's suggestion, but I also put my bags in a heavy glass drinking glass. Pull the sides of the bag over the glass and fill, NO Mess! Hope this helps

I have a wilton soft touch bag I have had FOREVER!! It cannot be destroyed. I don't have any other bags besides disposable.

My mom bought me a couple wilton bags--probably the same. I thought, wow, that's convenient. For colors. cool. I washed them one time and they split. Amazing. In the garbage. Invest in the soft touch. You won't be sorry.

I've been having the same problem, I'm wondering if they've changed the adhesive on the seams. I have some bags that are over 10 yrs old and they haven't split.

the only time i've had the featherweight bags split is when i wash them in the dishwasher, I think its from the extreme heat of the washer that loosens the glue causing the bag to split.

I too have gone to using mostly disposables. I like the kopy kake brand.

HI, I use the Ateco bags. I have had no problem with them. Infact they last so long that sometimes I am glad to have to throw one out and replace it with a new bag. icon_smile.gif I just counted them. I still have 119 out of a box of 200, and I bought them a loooooonnnnnggggg tiem ago. I can even remember when. So my advice would be to use the ATECO bags. icon_smile.gif

Can you put two wraps with different colors in one bag for 2-tone effect? TIA.

I bought the Wilton clear disposable bags once and every other one blew out at the seam. They are just too expensive to throw away like that. So now I only use the Wilton featherweight bags and ones I make out of parchment. The parchment is not expensive at all and you can use couplers with them to change out the tips. I've had my featherweight bags for several years and wash them every time in the dishwasher and have not had any trouble. I use them just about every time I do a cake.

I also use the Wilton disposable bags. They ALWAYS end up with a split or small hole that icing worms out of and it is always within one inch of the coupler and tip.
I have a Food Saver Vacuum Sealer. The bag material is much heavier. I could wash them after use. I'm going to make a few bags and try it. I'll let you know how it comes out.

I wonder too if they've changed the manufacturing. I have a bunch of wilton featherweight bags and I always run them through the dishwasher (without the heated dry). I also use the clear disposables and run those through the dishwasher and they last anywhere from 3-10 times that way. All the bags I'm using are ones I bought about a year ago when I got into decorating.

I would definately call wilton again and then from now on buy a different brand.

I also have run both my featherweights and disposables through the dishwasher without any problems. Matter of fact, my disposables last a long time - still have my original box. However, the last few times, I have just used parchment triangles for the purpose of ease of cleanup.

I just buy the gallon sized freezer bags and use them.

Works great--very pliable--easy to freeze--disposable!

How frustrating!! I hope Wilton makes good on sending you new bags. I haven't had any trouble with mine, but I've only been decorating for a few months. I've tried all of Wilton's bags, and I love the featherweight and parchment bags the best.

It's funny, because the one lady in my Wilton class kept splitting her bags all the time. I can't tell you how many she ruined. Could it be a bad batch or the adhesive like someone else mentioned??

Let us know what happens!

I've not tried this method with two colors in one bag, I would assume it would work, just make the blobs of icing smaller. When I do 2 colors, I've been using my pampered chef piping tool - it fill up really easy and my daughter can use it easier than a bag to make borders.

Good topic.... i now only use the disposable bags, and i read the plastic wrap idea and it does work nice - i dont stick the plastic wrap in the bag i just make the plastic wrap with icing in it like a squeee tube and squeeze it into the bag - soo clean! Also i have had bad luck with the featherweight bags - mine got all hard, cracked and stiff - that was the end of them for me, im not one for second shots with equipment. I havent done anything with parchment - how do you go about making them/ do you use them the same way as normal bags?

One thing my instructor taught me was if you have a blow out(with theclear plastic disposable ones)take a new bag snip the tip and drop the original bag with icing, tip and all into the new one and you dont have to change it until your done decorating. I made my sisters wedding shower cake this weekend and I had two blowouts.

Joanmary, how do you put the disposable bags in the dishwasher? How do you get them clean? I would love to do this instead of cleaning them by hand. LouAnn
