OK, everyone, is it really possible to bake and decorate cakes WITHOUT gaining weight??????? If you are one that can do it, PLEASE tell me how.... I am so upset with myself. I lost a great deal of weight last year and then a few months ago I decided to start baking and decorating cakes and it was then that I realized how weak I was. I couldn't believe how much I had gained back over the last couple of months ![]()
I always have a bit of batter left and I usually either use it up by making cupcakes or an 8 inch round. Well, I have to make sure that the cake is good so I taste test it which then leads to the whole cupcake or the whole 8 inch round
If I can't figure out how to get a grip on this, I guess I'll have to pack up my pans and supplies. Geeeez, I thought I was stronger than this. Any advice?????? PLease.........
Margie
LMAO....but I know it's not funny. I am trying to figure it out too!!!!!
I do the SAME thing.
SOMEONE SAVE US!!!!
I've gained weight too!! I think I'm going to have to step up my exercise!
It is such a challenge... but I have just come to terms with the waste. Meaning that I DO NOT bake up the extra batter, I run it down the drain, and its hard, because we don't want to be wasteful, but I think its the best way to avoid temptation. And I also make myself eat regular meals which sounds pretty logical but you know how it is when you're on a roll and you just keep eting frosting and no real food, but it is easier to avoid over doing that if I had a decent lunch, or dinner etc...
I'm right there with you!!! What I have started doing is taking my extra cakes and cupcakes to the neighbors and let them tell me how it tastes. It was the only thing I could think of to keep from eating them myself. So far, it seems to be working pretty good.

I hear that!!! It is so dang hard when I am trying to get the "baking" part of this hobbie down, So I HAVE to taste it to make sure I am not making people sick ![]()

Yeah that's my problem
Yeah that's it
Not WILL POWER or anything! ![]()

OH BOY - YES, this is impossible, especially for misers like me who just can not waste anything, but I am working hard to make sure all the cakes are for a group gathering, or leaving the house. Also stepping up the exercise again to help...we'll see. Good luck everyone!
I had this problem too but I quickly became "sick" of cakes and icing. Now I can't even bring myself to lick my finger it's so gross to me. ![]()
BUT - if you aren't repulsed by the idea of eating cake and icing, here's a suggestion.
Before beginning any baking project, make yourself eat a HUMONGOUS salad and drink a big glass of H20. Keep a bag of baby carrots handy at all times (or some other nutritious snack item of your choosing!) and just keep telling yourself over and over that you can do it!
That's me! But not cake! I can't stand cake anymore! It is not taking time to eat when I am doing cakes. Instead of stopping for meals I grab quick stuff, sandwiches, chips etc. Ugh! I have the most trouble with ganache. I always make too much so I can have some.
This has never been a real problem as I have a number of kids and their friends who willingly became my guinea pigs. I perfected my cakes and the types of frosting through them. My youngest only likes cake . I only eat cake once in a great while as CHEESECAKE is my vise. I get rave reviews on my cake but I feel I just need to practice more on the decorating. So gaining weight through cakes has not been a problem. Gaining weight through taking my medications is the problem.
I'm glad someone posted this because I've been wondering about it myself! I've noticed myself gaining a little weight since I started decorating cakes, and this is a huge issue for me. I used to weigh 200 pounds and it took a LOT of work to get to the 130 I'm at now and the last thing I want to do is sabotage everything I worked so hard for!
I don't so much have a problem with the cake itself (if I can make it past the batter stage - my favorite) as I do eating all the icing I can get my increasingly-chubby little hands on.
I've started dumping leftover batter as soon as the cake goes in the oven, and I used to save any leftover buttercream I had "just in case I needed it later" (yeah, right).. Then my fiance would come in and catch me with nothing but the entire bowl of icing and a spoon stuffing my face. So now I toss it as well.
I feel a little wasteful but it's worth it at 10:00 pm when my willpower is ZERO and the leftovers are so tempting.
Chew gum. Nothing more revolting than mixing mint gum and buttercream. ![]()
Ha ha ha hee hee, Doug, I like that. Hey, actually there is one neighbor that I've been giving a lot of cakes to. It's the one that about 2 weeks ago saw me out in the yard and yelled over to me, "You must be making more cakes these days" and just grinned
I think that she recognized that I was wearing my "fat pants" once again.... So, lots more cakes for her!!!!!! hee hee hee
Whew, I sure am glad I'm not the only one. I too lost alot of weight last year (80 pounds in 7 months) and have kind of plateaued since I started baking in January. I also give away my cakes (my work, the neighbors, church, my husband's work) but munch on the scraps. Now I try to drink a protien drink before I start decorating so that I won't be tempted as much. I also just recently stepped up the exercise because I have 50 more to loose. Best of luck to you!
I did Weight Watchers and lost 20 pounds, so I definitely don't want to put them back on!
I brush my teeth just before mixing the batter and then make sure I immediately throw the mixing bowl and beaters under soapy water to keep from licking the bowl clean. Also, I chew gum and drink water while I decorate. Those things have really helped me!
I' ve been a Weight Watchers Lifetime member since September and I make it a point to go weigh in at least once a month. That's what helps keep me from gaining weight. We'll see once I start making more though. Hopefully I won't start packing on the pounds!!

that's it!!!
fatten them up so we look thin by comparison!
doug ou crack me up! LOL
I loved cake but I am at a point where it all taste the same. I use my extras for any taste testings that have been requested or just have it ready at a consultation and offer it to them.
I love to eat the batter and the cake scraps when I level my cake, especially when it's warm. ![]()
If I have a lot of cake left over I will freeze it and use it later for cake balls. My practice cakes I will take to a local business and give it to them.
This is a good topic!!!! ![]()
I have had a couple of customers comment that how can I be skinny when I do these cakes, but I honestly don't want them because the smell of them baking kindof makes me feel full.
Sounds strange I know, I also don't eat the batter or icing by putting excess batter down the drain. You know I should make cupcakes and freeze them for family events, that would be a good idea with the excess.
But my family enjoys the leftovers, if my hubby comes home for lunch he will steal the leftover ganache or fight my 4 year old son for it! ![]()
I also make sure I cut 2 extra of flowers or shapes and leave them aside for my kids so my son doesn't mind playing on his own for a couple of hours and my 2 year old daughter wakes to a flower or leaf and thinks it is great!
They are going on about childhood obesity over here in Australia, but every morning that I decorate I run the kids ragged at the playground and figure it is usually only 2 cakes a week, so not much fondant! ![]()
If we end up putting on weight because our cakes are too gorgeous to resist, isn't that at least a good advert to our customers? ![]()
Try squishing the cakes flat instead of leveling..
Leftover frosting goes in dec bags, inside ziploc, and directly to the fridge..
Any extra batter is baked, and given to neighborhood kids right away..
My gramma sticks to what everyone else here says..
NEVER TRUST A SKINNY COOK

LOL!!!
Me too! I lost about 45lb with Weight Watches a couple of years ago, but have since regained all but 5lb of it ![]()
. It does make me unhappy because I had to work really hard to lose it, but it came back on very easily! I find it hard now I'm trying to get my business up and running. I like to taste things (I'm a scratch baker) to make sure they taste good. I try to give as much cake away as possible when I'm experimenting, my friend's husband is my biggest fan! My son's birthday is on Tuesday, so I will be making and eating cake then, but if there is lots left over after the party, I'll be sending it home with the attendees LOL! My daughter's birthday is 2 weeks after that, but I've sworn that I won't eat any cake between those two events, whether I have orders or not! I've just put in a batch of Decadent Cheescake Brownies (low-fat), and I'm looking forward to trying those, but after we have them for dessert tonight, I'll freeze what is left and defrost when we need some. After my daughter's birthday I have promised myself that they will be no more cake (for me), until my birthday in September and it's back to Weight Watchers. We'll see - I might try the cleaning the teeth thing, I've tried gum and that didn't stop me at all ![]()
! I don't want to be ultra-skinny, at 35 with 2 kids, just a size 8/10 would be enough (my boyfriend doesn't like really skinny women anyway!) - and I have a large bone structure and carry my weight well enough that it only means getting down to about 165lb for me (I'm about 205lb now). I know I can do it, I've done it already, I just need to put my mind to it and get off my big butt and do something about it. Good luck to everyone who'd fighting this neverending battle!
