I let a friend tell me that parchment triangles were better then bags. So I bought some, and I am trying to work on a bake tomorrow. The bags keep tearing! I have torn though 4 already. I am trying to save the icing so to speak, but I am loosing a ton that is just stuck on each one @@ This is a nightmare!!!! ![]()
I use both the parchment triangles and the disposable bags. I prefer the parchment triangles for "little jobs"....where just a tiny bit of one certain color, etc is needed. Otherwise, it's disposable bags all the way!
One thing that I find is very helpful with the parchment triangles, however, is to tape the edge of the bag (from where your tip is and up about 1/2 way). This helps keep them from "fraying" or opening up as you pipe.
Good Luck with your decorating!
Sounds to me like your icing is too stiff. I've used both over the years, and the only time I've experienced bags breaking through has been when my icing was too stiff.
Outside of that, I prefer the disposable or just purchase some nicer washable ones. These days I leave my disposables for teaching demos to young people and use my good ones for customer and family cakes. Hey washing beats buying new ones all the time, hands down!
Good luck! ![]()

This is exactly what I was going to say!! Thanks for typing it for me momthreekiddos![]()
I use the "clear" scotch tape.....the one with the red cardboard background, not the green cardboard background. I've found that it has a stronger adhesive. (I also use the "REAL" scotch tape....not the "generic" kind. Generic is good for some stuff, but NAME BRAND it is for tape, ketchup, and toilet paper!!!! LOL LOL)
Parchment is great, but NOT if you're trying to use it with a tip! I only use parchment for writers, because you can custom cut the tip as small or large as you need. You can make quick generic leaves with the parchment, too, but I don't like them as well as the actual leaf tips, so I don't use the parchment for that.
I pretty much only use parchment, I have about 30 couplers and I always have about 8 bags ready to go.
I have found that you have to make the bag the proper way to use it with the coupler otherwise it WILL fall apart on you when you try to secure the tip on.
What I mean is that if you make the parchement bag backwards when you put your tip in and then screw it on you are undoing your bag and loosing integrety.
Here are 2 web sites with drawings/pictures. They are doing it backwards to me. This is fine if you are not using a coupler and tips.

If you take the wilton pictures, you have to roll point C to point B so that portion is on the inside, then roll point A around to point B so it is outside.
When I get a fine point I fold the W over to the outside. I tape the bag abour 1/3 way from bottom.
(with real scotchtape like mentioned by someone else).
Then I make 4 notches 2 on each side and I fold over the little bit about 1/4 inch = those are called (cheap staples and they keep the bag in place.
I do not cut the paper I put the coupler in the bag, I screw on the coupler, then I take the edge and rip it off. or you can cut it off, that way you know the paper is stuck in place, I leave it alone for a few minutes for the creases to adjust. Then you are good to go.
The only time I have any problem is if I have to refill more than once. Then it gets a little messy.
I know it can be frustrating, but once you got it, you have no problems.
I really hope this helps.
Good Luck.
I use parchment and disposable and never had to tape. The key is not to overfill and I definately use couplers. Each person will end up having their own favorites I think! ![]()
I love parchment. Though when I first started I would only use re-usable. I still don't like Wiltons plastic. There are other kinds out there that are better. But parchment can be cut to any size that you need.
I don't use wilton reusable bags. I have the professional grade, soft vinyl reusable bags that come in different sizes. I would never use one smaller than a 14 inch for personal use. I have the wilton disposables for student use only, or for emergency use.
A good decorating bag is worth the money you pay for it. I just have trouble getting my kids to stop throwing them in the trash!!!
