Hi everyone! I am new to this site but I am finding it very useful. ![]()
I have a question I was hoping someone could help me out with.
I have a wedding cake ordered for the month of June and the reception hall is actually a glass conservatory that is not air-conditioned. I am planning on icing the cake in a buttercream icing and wonder what tips you might have to help the cake withstand the potential heat in the reception hall?
I am going to wait as close as I possible can to the reception start time before I assemble the cake but I wondered if any of you had any other tips as well!
Thanks in advance!! ![]()
Last summer here in South Dakota the temperture hit 103 degrees. The cakes were in air conditioning till the customer picked them up, but the minute they went outside in the heat the frosting melted. Im not sure what to tell you for advice, have a back up plan. Is there a room in the hall that doesn't have windows? Or a fridge to keep the cake in? Good Luck!
Wow. I've never had cake melt-down, including one sitting outside for 5 hours in 90 degree heat and super high humidity, but this one would even make ME nervous! At the very least, be sure the bride is aware of the possibilities because of the location (that SHE picked out!).
as a side story, we've implemented an "add'l labor fee" charge (min $275) for facilities that are not 'vendor friendly'. In my view: "If you're going to pick a stupid place to have a reception, then you're gonna pay for it!"
Welcome to Cake Central. If your icing is not all-butter it will hold up better. Also, refrigerate the cakes as long as possible. Transport it as cool as you can (blue ice in/near the boxes) As long as it is not in the direct sun, it should be OK.
Verify the placement of the cake! You won't want to get to the site and find the cake table arranged in front of the hottest window.

I thought it didn't get over 65 degrees over there......lol
I lived in MN for 9 years and I never remember being warm.......
Are you kidding girlfriend??? My mom lived on the Minnisota/South Dakota border. It can get hot! Not as bad as some places, but hotter than 65. And the mosquitos are so big they'll carry you off!!!!!

I tell my husband that we have two seasons here in North Dakota, Winter and Almost Winter.
It's not that it really gets hot often in this region but it does get humid which can make in uncomfortable especially for people used to really cold weather. Most people around here complain when it gets above 75-80 and say it's too hot.
My parents moved me to MN when I was 12 and I haven't seen a real summer since.
It does get warm sometimes and occasionally you have a hot day or two but it never lasts long.
Of course this is me, I like it to be at least 80 and keep my air set to that.
