I have been inspired by everyone on this website. icon_biggrin.gif I would like to start cake decorating. Where do I begin? I have a Michaels in my area and a cake store that offers decorting classes. Is there any begining supplies I need to start buying? Thanks in advance!

Hi: Take as many classes as you can, read the cake decorating books that are out there, and practice, practice, practice. Vicki0052.

You can start with just a couple of cake pans, you can start with 8 or 9 inch round by 2 inch deep. There are tons of great recipes on this site for icing and cakes, so jump in and bake a cake. Get a large and small icing spatula, to help with smoothing the icing. There is a tutorial on this site that tells you how to get smooth icing, check the articles for the one about faux fondant finish with Viva papertowel. If you can, sign up for a Wilton course 1 at the Michael's and they will give you info on the basics you need for the course and it is a good start. They are always running deals on the classes.

If you just want to do it on your own, I would start with star tips #16 and #18, Writing tip #3, rose tip #104, and leaf tip #352.

Hope that helps. Good luck and have fun!!

If you do decide to take a class at michaels, wait on buying your supplies till yousign up for the class. You don't have to bring anything at all to the first class and your instructor will show you what she uses, what she reccommends ect, and you get 10 percent off anything you buy from Wilton(thats in most stores, some are more strict and only give you the 10 percent on the course kit). The main things you need you wil accumulate while you take the classes. There are lists of "must have's" if you don't take a class and I know they have been posted on here many times before, just do a search in the forum. The best thing you can do it keep practicing. Good Luck.

When I started in cake decorating I just read a lot of books and magazines, some bought, some borrowed from the library. Wilton yearbooks are great to start with. Never took a single class for cake decorating but had lots of practice! My most valuable tools are my offset spatula and cake turner. Eventually you will want more and more equipment as you go along. And eventually you will learn that this hobby can get expensive! LOL!

I haven't taken the Wilton classes yet but I want to. I started decorating in February of this year when made a Valentine's cake for my fiance and it went from there. I bought a couple of the beginner decorating books and some basic supplies and just made cake for anyone who would eat it. It gave me a chance to practice and everyone I knew got free cake icon_smile.gif
