I have been asked to do a cake for a party at the end of May that has a "recess games" theme. There will be jump rope, hopscotch, 4 square, sidewalk paint/chalk, basketball. Basically games that kids play on the blacktop at recess.

I have absolutely NO clue what to do! Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I've done searches in the gallery using different topics but nothing is coming up. HELP!!

do a sheet, give it black top surface

fondant figures of kids doing the various games ...scatter them out around the top.

message could be part of the chalk writing/painting.

Or you could do a tiered cake with each tier a diff game, with figurines and accessories to that game. Good luck!

Wow what an incredible drawing! thank you!

I have only ever worked with fondant once and that was on my last cake. I made penguins which are just oval egg shapes. I have NO idea how to do figurines. I guess I have a few week's to practice, any tips to share?

would you pipe the games or do those out of fondant too? like pipe the hopscotch, 4square, etc.

flat stuff -- like hopscotch, etc. yep -- pipe it.

check out the polyclay books and websites for tutorials on people -- (tho' mine would tend to look like penguins w/ arms and heads!)

If you wanted something easy you could do something with fondant marbles, soccer ball, volleyball, basket ball ... do they still play tether ball? I'm thinking these 'balls' could be the borders, or wired so they look like they're bouncing. It may be a little easier than a crash course with figures, then again don't be scared off the figures - not all as hard as they look.

the bouncing balls sounds like a neat idea. what kind of wire would you use? is there special cake wire? icon_smile.gif

I'm not use to working with fondant so if I did say a soccer ball how would I get the different colored squares to give it the effect of a soccer ball? can you pipe on fondant? like if I did a basketball could I pipe on the lines of the basketball? as you can see this is new territory for me. I've done some good cakes nothing with fondant (well except the penguins).

Sorry for all the questions.

Don't ever be sorry on CC for asking questions - that is I believe, is one of the main reasons it's here!
I personally would just a heavy gauge floral wire to hold the balls, then you could even make an 'M' shape for the bouncing if wanted. Fondant is similiar to clay so you could just roll a ball, mark the details (ex: like the texture for a basketball = lightly poking it with a toothpick etc.), you can also just paint food colouring on for the other details. ex: the black octagons for the soccar ball, footbal laces etc.

You can get special wire for cakes, but I can't comment on it as I've never used it myself. I do know it's alot more expensive than the floral wire, and you can get the floral in white or plain and wrap it in whatever color tape you like.

That is a great idea about the balls and the wire. Thanks.

How much of a cop out would it be if I purchased the figurines from cake store - like the plastic ones? Is that like a big no no??? icon_smile.gif

The only fondant I have ever made was the marshmallow fondant. I'm thinknig of getting the store bought fondant for the figures if I decide to make them myself. No one will eat them anyway. Has anyone worked with the Wilton store bought fondant before?

I also have to do a Libby Lu's cake later this month too with lipstick, make up, etc. on the cake. I'm assuming I will do those in fondant too. I guess I will be working a lot with fondant this month!
