Just a general question to throw out there.... how do you know when you're ready for wedding cakes. My special occasion cakes have progressed so much over the years and I always get great feedback, but the thought of being responsible for someone's WEDDING cake scares me a little (which shows I'm not ready!) But how do you know when you are ready!?

i think that if people see your work and they then want you to do their wedding i would do it because your work should for the most part be similar to what you have alredy done.

i am still a nervous wreck when asked to do any tiered cake!!

but like stated above when someone asks you to do their cake they obviously like the way your cakes look and trust you can do it.

its good to be nervous..ensures you take it seriously and will do your best

Remember .... a wedding cake is just three little cakes all stacked up.

You can do it!

i like that. Just a quick question about tiered wedding cakes. you use a separator plate or cardboard cut to the same size and then dowels underneath and thats it? for example to do an 8 and a 10 stacked you would do 4 dowels in the 10 and an 8 on an 8 cardboard (not covered-or is it covered liek normal??) and sit it on top of the 10.

For me a wedding cake was my first cake. My grandmother and I made mine together. I think when you get to the point where you think what you're doing isn't challenging enough or you see a cake and think, " I love that.... I want to try it!" Just the fact your asking this question makes me think you'd like to give it a go!!!

It's when your little (not so little any more) Granddaughter says " Gramma, you know how much I love your cakes.... will you PLEASE, PLEASE make my wedding cake..... I don't want any other gifts from you..... just PLEASE make my cake??"

To be honest, the only way I think you will ever know is if you jump in and try it. If you've been doing cakes for awhile you know enough about the basics to be able to do it for sure. I have learned that the only way to learn how to do it and get good at it is to do it and learn from your mistakes, and everybody has some! It does help if the first ones you do are for people you know well (like family and friends) who will forgive you if there is a problem. I actually only did 2 for family before I started to do it for customers that paid. The confidence will eventually come (after about the first 100 that you do----kidding!)
GOOD LUCK!

I know what you mean about being nervous. I get nervous making my family cakes. No one in my family decorates cakes, so everyone thinks they are good (except me). But to do it for a Bride OMG!!!! However, please try, I'm sure you will do a great job. icon_smile.gif

When I did my first wedding cake I wasn't ready do it, But my cousin got married and It just felted like a good first opportunity.
I took me hours and hours, to do the most simple cake. The at the reception, the florist helped me finish it. I was nervous the whole party, looking at the table were the cake was, expecting to fall any minute.
But everything just went ok, and my cousin was very happy. So that was it, I had made my first wedding cake.
I just like Debbie says, One cake on top of the other. You'll never be ready until you do it.

Same thoughts here about being nervous for doing a wedding cake. However, if you put the same love & effort into doing it as if it were your own wedding cake, I'm sure everything will come out roses!! (that is, if the bride WANTS roses on her cake.... ) icon_lol.gif

They must have asked you for a reason - and that reason is that they are confident enough in your ability and love your work so much, that they want to showcase it on their big day!! not to put anymore pressure on you or anything... thumbs_up.gif

Well, I actually volunteered to do a wedding cake. It's for a young couple getting married this Tuesday. They were not going to have a wedding or a reception, but their friends decided to pitch in and give them one. Since my husband is the officiant, I asked her if I could make a wedding cake for them as a gift from us. She was thrilled!!!! She is so excited. And now I'm nervous about it. Oh well!!! It will be great practice as I know they will appreciate anything.

I've done a few wedding cakes that I probably shouldn't have done. There's something to be said about being smart and cautious but sometimes you have to just take the chance.

How fun to read all the responses that have come so far! You're all so encouraging and adorable!!

I had a chance to do a wedding cake and didn't take it, because I wasn't sure if I should. We went to the wedding this weekend, and to put it simply the cake was not that awesome! I mean, it was nice, it was ok, I just knew I coulda done it, possibly better, and wished I had done it and taken the opportunity! Oh well, live and learn!! But I like the idea to do friends and family first to get my feet wet. Just need to set some people up so I have upcoming weddings!! hahaha!

Three little cakes stacked, I like that!! One upside to wedding cakes.... no writing on them!

I had just finished my Wilton course 3 cake.I took it into work and a coworker saw it and asked me if Id be interested in making his daughters cake in July. Before he could get all the words out of is mouth I said yes.I still wonder why I did that but If I didnt Id probably still be scared to try. Just go for it.Like everyone says, I think of it as 3 cakes put together. The cake I have to do Is 4 tiers and 3 side cakes. I ponder it everyday. And I wont be ok till its all over
