I need to make a 1/2 sheet cake with a carnival theme for a party next weekend. They are having clowns, an inflatable jump thing, pony rides, face painting, etc. My customer is requesting a unique cake that incorporates the carnival theme. I have done clowns, but they don't look that great, and I can't think of anything else! I have also worked with fondant, but my shaping/molding skills aren't that great! I really need some ideas!! TIA

Use balloons! Get some small balloons or water balloons (if you have an air compressor to blow them up). Wash them off before putting them on your cake.....they probably won't really touch your cake that much anyway. I'm not sure if the picture is going to attach, but check out my pictures. This was for my son's circus party, but I think the most important thing would be to incorporate a lot of red, yellow and blue....primary colors (and of course lots of ribbon and balloons).

Maybe you can find candy molds that are carnivalish or circusie and do them to add to the cake. I like Ape's idea of the balloons that was great and the colors need to be primary since that is very true to carvivals.

does it have to be a sheet cake if not uyou could try a carosel cake those are adorable and dont look to hard.

Whenever I think of a carnival or circus, I think Big Top. I found a really cute example on the following website.

http://magazines.ivillage.com/countryliving/recipefinder/recipe/0,,581946,00.html

Hope this helps. I'm sure you could put several on a sheet cake and have lots of different colors. Take care and good luck.

Oh, one more thought. I was thinking carnival food too! Funnel cakes, cotton candy, snow cones, hot dogs, and carmel apples. Not sure how do do them, but maybe make little one with fondant and place them on wires or attach them to the sides of the cake. Probably not feasible ideas. Just wanting to help!

These are great ideas, thank you! Please keep them coming!! As for the carousel idea, I already thought of it, but it does have to be a sheet cake.

Petite - Call me stupid, but I just looked at the website you listed, and I can't tell what the little tents are made from!!! I like the cake (I am thinking I could maybe add a couple of 3" cakes on top of the sheet cake), but I want to know how to do those tents!! I love the carnival food idea!

CakeGurl - I will definately look for candy molds, thanks for the great tip!

When you first mentioned your carnival, I immediately thought

"girlie" as in like a maypole with ribbons.

Then I thought of those first little figures taught in Wilton Class I. They are actually really cute.
