When you are doing a tiered cake that is not stacked (has pillars between) and your cake plate is the same size as your cake, where do you have room to put your border? or do you use a bigger plate than what your cake is so you have room (like you do for an occasion cake)?
I hope this makes sense.

Often, if the cake is 10", you would use a 11" or 12" plate. If you can't find plates the sizes to match what you need, you can use a covered board over the smaller plate (under the cake, but on the separator plate). That leaves room for the borders.
