well, she actually liked this whale cake minus the pirate ship.
I'm sorry I don't know where this pic. came from. If I can find it I"ll give credit.
but how do I make this whale?? I'm thinking take round cakes and cut them in half and then 'stand' them up next to each other. And then just carve the back part of the cake out of a sheet cake??
Also she wants a killer whale!! But w/the way this whale is positioned...you won't see the white belly! So it's just going to be all black, except for eyes and water spray. Think that will be ok??
anyone have any suggestions?? i need to bake the cakes tonight!!
To be able to see the white belly, you would have to elevate the head a little, as if the whale wants to come out of the water. How many servings does she need, want? There are a couple of shark cakes around in the gallery, if you copy those, but make them into a whale, it might work.

The Killer Whale has some white markings other than its belly. Here is a link to show you a side view:

I'd love to see a photo when you are finished ![]()
Good Luck! ![]()
thanks....everyone. got a few things to work with!! unfortunately I don't have the egg pan
i think that would have worked great!!
but I've printed out some side views of the whales....and think I could get some white showing!! since i only have two days to get this done....and i haven't done many sculpted cakes....trying to make this as easy as possible!
if i had more time I'd do a complete practice cake first!!

this is not the cutiest whale but it might help you get started.
Another option would be an oval loaf pan if you have one on hand...
I just got back from Sea World. It was fabulous. Shamu's new show "Believe" is GREAT! I can't wait to see you cake. My son now wants everything SHAMU. He even says when he grows up he wants to be a SHamu trainer.
Good luck on your cake...post pics when your done!
well i ended up going to michael's last night and bought the football pan. they didn't have an egg. but i also saw my wilton instructor there and she had the egg pan. so i borrowed that from her today. i didn't get home in time to bake last night...so i'll be rushed tonight and tomorrow to get it finished. I'm not sure which one i'll use yet! I'm thinking the egg pan will work best....like in the pic toniea sent.
i hope it turns out as good as the pic i have in head!!
just wanted to thank everyone for their help. i think he turned out great considering I didn't have much time to plan. I can truly appreciate all those 3D cake makers out there!!
My husband, mom, and I had a bet to see what he would actually end up looking like. He went from a spaceship, to a submarine, to that blimp thing.....so we were all surprised when my 2yr old walked in and literally screamed....'THAT's A WHALE, MOMMY!! I WANNA TOUCH IT!!"
I usually use my son as my 'tester' for looks. he can tell what it is...then I'm ok!! ![]()
thanks again guys!!
The photos of the work in progress are wonderful - if people only knew the anquish we go through at each stage of a cake! The whale is great - you did not mention if she was happy with it (hard to believe she would not be)
Pinkbunny, it's PERFECT!!!! Wonderful work on that ![]()
. It looks like you've been doing sculpted cakes forever, would never have guessed that you haven't done many, it's just great!!!! I'm very happy for you ![]()

And the Mom absolutetly LOVED it...she did a little YIPPEE dance!! ![]()
I won't find out how her son liked it until Monday. But she said Killer Whales are his favorite....so I hope it went over well!!
