How did you start getting business? I heard word of mouth is wonderful, but I am new to a town and do not know anyone yet? I keep getting business 2 hours away, where I used to live.

Also, where do you find out about bake sales and such if you do not have children in school?

I know it sounds like I haven't done any research, but believe me, I have. I took 1 year of full research before finally deciding to sell my cakes in my new town.

Thank you everyone for any help.

Thea

The only thing I can think of is to make some small samples and take them to neighbors or other businesses. You can give them your number and let them know you are new to the area and do all sorts of cakes.

One thing that helped me was making a website. That way people could go online and view my cakes. You have some really gorgeous cakes!!! thumbs_up.gif You should look into making a website. icon_smile.gif

What about having a free cake tasting. Maybe you could advertise it in the local newspaper and list a number for people to sign up. If you just get 5 people to come you could make a couple of different cakes all decorated differently and if people sign up. when they come have a flyer made up explaining your business, prices, etc and simply explain that you are new to the area and wanted to give them a sample of your product. Of course, I would only do this if you are legal!!!!

Thank you for the ideas. I know it is silly that I never thought of some of those before. But my neighbors do love me, I have given them several cakes for sampling. icon_lol.gif I do have a website up, but it is underconstruction right now. I am trying to get a gallery going, and I am having a difficult time with it. Hopefully this weekend. Never thought about businesses. That will be my next step. I am licensed so I will look into a cake testing. Do you charge for it? How much if you do?

Thanks you guys! (Very Minnesotan saying!)

How about donating a cake to your or a church? Or bringing sample cakes to the place you get your hair cut....That is how I started out. The lady that does my hair also owns the shop and I told her I was doing cakes and did a few for her and she spread my name like wild fire!

Good Luck!

If you do a cake testing for a small group, I would probably not charge. I would do several mini cakes with different icings, flavors and designs and make it clear that you are new in town and are looking to get new customers. Even if only one person orders from you, you can surely bet that you'll quickly get more customers. You know nothing is better than word of mouth advertising. Good Luck!!!!!
