Hello friends,
I'm going to a get together this week-end & I have been asked if we could bring an appetizer, Anyone have any good ideas, I would really like to impress these people, however this must be a kid friendly dish, as there will be lots of kids there. I'm really hoping to impress them, however i'm running low on ideas for the dish as well as presentation as we all know is key when presenting a dish you want them to remember & like.
Thanks for any help that can be provided ![]()
jovigirl--
I like to do ham roll-ups.
Spread cream cheese on a flour tortilla with a tiny bit of sweet pickle relish. Top with a slice of lunchmeat ham and tightly roll. Wrap in platic wrap and sit overnight in refrigerator. Slice into rounds and serve with toothpicks.
Another option:
Slice a french baguette roll into 1/2" slices, butter and lightly toast. Top with either cream cheese or cream cheese and Feta cheese. Then spoon on a bit of Tomato Pesto.
Hey Mac!! That's the exact thing I was thinking of too! Ham roll ups!!
Kids love them and adults and they are easy to handle. Here's a bump for ya jovigirl
One of the things I do that always gets rave reviews, yet is so easy is a baked brie. You just get the frozen phyillo dought (or you can use puff pastry) - You layer the phyllo dough (brushing each piece with butter before stacking the next) I usually use about 8-12 sheets. Then you place a round of brie - with the rind still on (very important) then top the brie round with cranberry sauce (homemade, or some chunky kind works the best, - I have also used apricot or other jam) wrap the brie up, brushing all with butter and bake for about 15 -20 mintues until phyillo is browned. You can make it and heat it up at the house you are going to (if it is a long ride I might keep a damp towel on it). If I am feeling creative, I use my little cookie cuters and add leafs on top.
You can serve it with any type of cracker, or sliced bagettee. I usually cut the first slice, then that yummy brie oozed all over! Always a hit!
Oh, and I just thought of the obvious--make any kind of sandwich and use a cookie cutter to cut them into fun shapes.
Or buy the premade tart cups and fill with mac and cheese or make a chicken pot pie filling with veg-all and ready-to-serve chicken. If you would like the recipe--email me. These are easy for little hands to handle.
Mini pizzas using flattened biscuit dough, cut in half. Or the ever popular, cocktail sausages in biscuits. I have a book that has these kinds of ideas--I'll look in it and send you some more ideas.

Mac and Coffeecake have good ideas.
Can you use the oven at this location? How long from the time you make the appetizer until it is presented?
I have a recipe that's kinda an appetizer, kinda a dessert, but definitely kid friendly.
I received this from a co-worker
Pumpkin Dip
1- 16oz cool whip
1- 15oz pumpkin pie filling
- 5oz package instant vanilla pudding
pumpkin pie spice to taste
**optional** cinammon to taste
Mix all ingredients together in a LARGE bowl. Serve with graham crackers. (Makes alot!)
To make it kid friendly you could server Teddy Bear Graham crackers with it.
You guys are all awesome!!! Thank you for the great ideas, There will be an oven & I'm sure I will be able to use it, as the main course will be Bbq.
One other detail I forgot is one of the families are vegans so I guess I should make something without any sort of meat. I guess I will be taking more than 1 dish so everyone can enjoy. I have one and a half days to figure this out.
Thanks again everyone!!! ![]()

Here is another appetizer we like. You could always make a half a batch and see if you like it, that is what I did the first time I made it.
Buffalo Chicken Dip
2 (10 ounce) cans chunk chicken, drained
2 (8 ounce) packages cold cream cheese, cubed
1 cup prepared Ranch salad dressing
3/4 cup pepper sauce, such as Franks® Red Hot®
1 1/2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
1 bunch celery, cleaned and cut into 4 inch pieces
1 (8 ounce) box chicken-flavored crackers (or your favorite cracker)
1 Heat chicken and hot sauce in a skillet over medium heat, until heated through. Stir in cream cheese and ranch dressing. Cook, stirring until well blended and warm. Mix in half of the shredded cheese, and transfer the mixture to a slow cooker. Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top, cover, and cook on Low setting until hot and bubbly. Serve with celery sticks and crackers.

Here's an easy one that is definately kid friendly. Every party I go to I am asked to make these as they are tasty and finger lickin good! One recipe will make 4 1/2 dozen.
Rye Party Puffs:
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup rye flour
1 stick margarine
1 cup water
1 tsp Garlic powder
1 tbls parsley flakes
2 tsp caroway seeds
4 eggs
Heat margarine and water over medium heat until boiling. Add remaining ingrediants until if foams a smooth ball. Remove from heat and let stand 5 minutes. Beat in eggs one at a time mixing after each addition. Drop by small tsp. onto a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 400 for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Remove immediately and slice each puff in two.
When cool fill with your favorite rye dip or I use the chipped beef dip:
1 package chipped beef - shredded
2 tbls. minced onions
1 tbls horse radish
2 tbls. fresh chives chopped small
8 oz. cream cheese
1/4 cup sour cream
1/4 cup mayo
Mix all together and fill the party puffs. It's better if the dip sets for a day and the spices mix in and add a lot of flavor.
You can also make plain puffs by eliminating the spices and use 1 cup of plain flour instead of 1/2 and 1/2.
It's very simular to Doug's recipe but individual bits. Less mess. I have an upcoming party that I have to make 10 batches for.
