Where did you get it? Was it enclosed in a plastic bag inside the container? If not, it should have been. I use Satin Ice all the time and it has never been hard. It will be solid as a chunk but the more you knead it the more pliable it gets.

Hope that helps.

I ordered 4 cases (80 lbs) of Satin Ice a couple weeks ago directly from the manufacture in NY. 2 - 20lb buckets and 20 - 2lb buckets. I opened one large and two small buckets. They are very firmly packed but shouldn't be dry. You have to kneed for a minute or two to make it pliable. If you have crumbly dryness, return it for a refund. It should be moist.

I use Satin Ice. It is hard when you open it- as in the fact that it's compressed to fit in the bucket makes it a solid "chunk"- but it shouldn't be dried out. I generally get a knife and cut off what I need, then I start kneading it and it softens up.

It should not be dried out, cracking. I have heard, but have never had to try it, that adding shortening to it may soften it. Not sure if it will work, but could try it on a little bit of it. LOL.
