Many of mine come from the scrapbooking section of a hobby store. You can also find them at art supply stores. Just look for boxes marked non-toxic. Most of them are.

I bought myself a small container of the kids sidewalk chalks from Toyrus which say non-toxic right on the label.I shave a bit off with a exacto knife to create a powder and then use with a brush!!Inexpensive and it works!!

I bought a set of 48 non-toxic colors at Micheal's from their "fine art" section - just under $5 retail, but I had a coupon thumbs_up.gif . I took a gumpaste class there, and the instructor used a small wire mesh strainer (the smallest of an inexpensive set of three or four with plastic long handles that you can find at Wal-Mart). She held the chalk in the "bowl" of the strainer and rubbed it back and forth - only the nice, fine dust fell through, ready for use.

Is it edible if people WANT to eat the gumpaste flowers?

it won't hurt them if it is non-toxic. and if they don't mind the taste of gumpaste, then I can't see them objecting to the taste of the chalk . . . lol.

Thanks, I was just checking.
Given the whole conversation about the Sculpy molds and using not food safe items, i was just wondering. I'm sure plenty of kids have eaten and licked chalk...including my own, and she is none worse for the wear. LOL!

Mine too icon_lol.gif I don't know what it is about sidewalk chalk that makes kids want to put it in their mouths LOL Like the Sculpey molds, the chalks are also non-toxic/not harmful. I think there was a bit of an over-reaction in that thread that has all of us asking more questions.

NON TOXIC does not mean it is edible. Most GP flowers are wired and are not intened for eating. However, some accents without wires are often taken by children.

It is always better to be safe, than sorry.

I agree with you. Non-toxic doesn't mean edible. The dusting powders used in cake decorating in the US usually aren't food approved via the FDA so we can't call them edible but we can say that they aren't harmful if eaten.
